Today I started a brand new MacBook Pro for the first time and followed the on-screen prompts to transfer data from an older Mac (MBP 2.16GHz Core2Duo running 10.6.8) via firewire. The procedure was different from the one I am accustomed to, which involves starting the old machine in target disc mode. This time, I was instructed to open Migration Assistant on the old MBP and select "from this Mac". This I did, whereupon it appeared that Migration Assistant on the new MBP established a connection with the old MBP, which was already connected to the new MBP with a Firewire cable. But once the transfer started, it progressed at a snail's pace. It started almost 5 hours ago and will very likely continue all night long. It occurred to me that the transfer is proceeding as though it were taking place over wi-fi. So here's my question:

Is it possible that OS X Lion took it upon itself to connect with the old MBP over wi-fi even though the two machines were wired together via Firewire? I do not recall having any opportunity to explicitly select Firewire as the transfer mode.

Information very much appreciated.
