Close window = close just the current (frontmost) window, leaving any other windows you may have open.
Close all windows = close all windows.
I am not sure I understand what is happening with the proliferation of new windows. How are you opening new web pages?
Hi Charlie, thanks for responding.
For example, I'll open Safari and be at home page i.e. BBC News
I might then click on link to Yahoo mail and get messages
Then perhaps visit Apple store from my bookmarks....
To then get rid of the Apple store page I try 'close window' and what happens is that everything closes, BBC, Yahoo, Apple store. Safari does seem to stay open and shown as toolbar icon, which I click on to go back to my home page.
Hope I've explained that ok
Charlie, thanks for continuing to help.
From your question, I think I've worked it out. Ithought that every time a webpage was opened, it was in a new window! Having read (and re-read) the Safari help item regarding this, now realise that each new webpage opens in the same window, unless one specifies to open in a new window (control - click on link)
I'm sure though that, on my old iMac, this wasn't the case and that each page automatically opened in a new window.
Anyway, I hope I'm right in my reasoning on this and will proceed on that basis.
Thank you again for pointing me in (hopefully) the right direction
