Just to throw the cat amoungst the pigeons. I know some of you are seeing results in turning off iTunes Match - but I'm not convinced iTunes Match is the issue - maybe for some just a contributing factor. I have three friends with iPhones (Gen 4). None of them have purchased iTunes Match and all three have the same issue of missing images, blank grey space and then app freeze on the Music Store.
This has to be an iTunes Store server issue which maybe greatly increased for those with iTunes Match - but if users without iTunes Match (and I don't just mean installed - I mean never purchased) the issue must be a wider problems with either iOS5.1.1 or the iTunes servers. For the record they are all on different providers and using different wifi networks.

I have been working with the iTunes team today on the problem and I agree with you that the iTunes Match link may be less important than we think, or at least not the primary cause.. It appears it is the size of the music library involved on the device affects the iTunes Store, which Can be big if you have iTunes Macyh turned on.
So if you have a large iTunes Match library linked to your device OR a large number of tracks synced to your device the iTunes Store is very slow and buggy.
If you reduce the size of the iTunes library by Turing iTunes Match off or by reducing the number of tracks synced to the device the iTunes Store operates quickly with no issues.
They are still working on this and have promised an update once they have something solid to report.

I can confirm that I have the same problem described by Kaostheory7,

I'm currently running an iPhone 4S, having had the 3GS and 3G prior to that. I do not currently subscribe to iTunes Match. I've never had this problem before and it only seems to have arisen since the installation of iOS 5.1.1
Hopefully Apple will get to the bottom of this soon.

This problem seems to be getting worse for me. At first it was just a delay in loading page content. Now it never loads and usually crashes iTunes on my iPhone. I haven't tried it on my iPad in a while.
I have iTunes Match but my library hasn't gotten that much bigger in recent weeks. ITunes on iOS used to work fine for me with my library size and iTunes match. Something has changed in recent weeks To make it al let unusable
This is a bit rediculous. Imagine going to Target and finding half the shelves are tipped over and the lights are all out. This is their store. They should test the heck out of it before they release and update. I really hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

I have the same issue on Ipad2 with IOS 5.1.1.
I had itunes match on before the 5.1.1 update and it worked fine.
Only after the update did it go south for me so I'd have to agree with KeanosMagicHat
Match is only part of the problem, if any.
I would expect Apple to treat this as a major issue 'cause this must really be costing them money.

I have had this same issue now for well over week...VERY frustrating!!! Both iPhone 4s and iPad(3)... I don't even TRY and get anything on iTunes store- my podcasts won't even LOAD to look at them and now it crashes 1 out of 3 times I even try on the iPad- and yes I have done a COMPLETE wipe and retore rebuilding entire thing FROM SCRATCH without syncing or reloading from my iCloud backup- a LOT of time wasted and same exact issue.........

Just to add another voice to what Ian has already posted here. Both myself & wife have had slow loading of the iTunes app on our respective iPads and both of us have iTunes Match. My iTunes library is considerably larger than my wife's (13k tracks as apposed to 1.5k tracks) and my iTunes store app loads considerably slower, however the moment I switched off iTunes Match on my iPad the store loaded instantly.

Well this explains why I've been unable to use iTunes for the past week. The problem is happening on a 4S, ipad3 (4g) and I've seen it over Vodafone, t-mobile and BT broadband. I'm in the uk.
Bit of a shame really as I've been thinking of buying an album but I can't actually look at it to decide!

I don't have iTunes match at all. Also I am still on 5.1 The problems started on Saturday the 12th. It's not across the board. Some podcasts show up fine and download with no problems. Others just hang without showing picture icons. It might depend on how many episodes there are.
Bbc comedy of the week is fine.
Which technology is not.
I use and iPad 2. Everthing else is ok including the app store. I did get one funny email on the 12th which indicated that my security questions had been altered. However I checked and nothing had changed.

Same here. New iPad running 5.1.1 & iTunes match on. In the UK and the same slow performance on o2 3G & virgin media 30meg broadband. iTunes store is totally unusable. Really really annoying.
ISP and device type don't seem to have anything to do with the problem. I've been looking into this for a while now.
I have always had occasional lag issues with iTunes match (music app on iPad has always been noticeably laggy with iTunes match, particularly in playlists menu). However, the iTunes store issue has only gotten worse since 5.1... To me, it looks more like a server issue that they've failed to address.
