Standard 1-year warrenty does not cover accidental damage.
Apple just added the ability to buy AppleCare+ (note the "+") that is different from AppleCare that can provide a replacement for a fee. If you do not remeber buying it, you likely did not.
An "out of warranty" replacement from Apple for upwards of 1/2 the cot of the original unit is likely your only recourse.

Homeowner's insurance or rental insurance you pay. I puchased an extra policy on my homeowner's policy to cover my MBP, but your insurance agent will tell you if you are covered.
I beleieve AppleCare+ for iPad is new this year.

Apple's Limited Warranty http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/ for iPad excludes coverage for damage resulting from accident, disassembly, unauthorized service and unauthorized modifications.
Apple will provide a replacement iPad for:
iPad model Out-of-Warranty Service Fee New iPad $299 iPad 2, iPad $249
You can get the glass replaced at 3rd party repair sources for less $, however, the Apple warranty will be voided.
