They are generally connected via one of the USB ports. I have a Dell monitor that has a built-in web cam and mic. Connected via one USB port it "just works."

Would like to know more about MAC mini, how to connect web cam to MAC mini.
(1) Get a USB web cam like one of those described in http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/
If the cam you buy comes with Mac software, don't install it unless you are using
Mac OS X older than 10.4.9. After Mac OS X 10.4.8, all necessary drivers are part of
(2) If the cam you get does not have its own mic, you may also want a mic for podcasts, voiceovers, and audio/video chat.
I use Logitech USB Desktop Microphone: http://store.apple.com/us/product/T6831LL/A
For the price, it offers very good noise rejection and nice voice quality.
