I'm not sure that I buy the library size argument. My library hasn't changed size by more than an album or two in several months, but this issue is new.

I don't think the issue happens once people pass a certain size library.  I agree - the issue is new, but the people without problems have a relatively small library.

Agreed. It could have been an issue introduced with 5.1.1, but it also could be a server side issue, requiring no iOS update at all.

My library also did not increase. It can't be conicidence that it started when apple released 5.1.1. However I have not yet updated to 5.1.1. So it must be something that they have updated server end to allow for 5.1.1.

To add a case: same problem here on new iPad on at least three wifi networks, at home, work and abroad in Europe. Also seemed to start with 5.1.1. Seems to be getting worse. Initially just slow, then freezing, now crashes to desktop. iTunes crippled, at best. At worst, unusable. 5,700 tracks... (Does that count as large? - rhetorical) Match never enabled. No problems on iPhone 3GS still on iOS 4.3.x or so. I guess only a fraction with the problem post here (I know of one other who hasn't). Must be affecting sales...so I assume the pips (if they're  not called that, they should be;-) are trying hard to fix it...

My iPhone 4 is now exhibiting the itunes store problems. As per my previous posts, I was able to use this when the initial problem arose on my iPad. Have now bought three albums on Amazon that otherwise would have been purchased on iTunes - this must be costing Apple a fortune!!!! Even just using the total views on this thread as a yardstick this must be upwards of 150,000 pounds........

Having used iTunes for its convenience with Apple products for more than 5 years and spent money on Match I now find myself in the position of looking elsewhere for downloads.

This problem needs to be fixed NOW.

It seems to also coincide with my iPad and iPhone continuously asking for my Apple ID. This is annoying enough in itself and does not fill me with confidence using iTunes.

Although my library has 3000 tracks, I have only bought some 180 from the store (plus a small number of videos).

    I haven't got match.

Actually not that much, I've bought about 550 tracks from iTunes, the rest was imported from my CD collection (37gb in total).

Sorry, I should have said that over time I have also downloaded lots of podcasts from the store. As I don't have them any more I don't know the number, but I guess it must be several hundred.

    4772 tracks here.

I take it the iTunes store team are testing this when away from the office as well?

If it is an Apple server side issue as we are suspecting, they would only be able to replicate the problem by testing with a music library that was on a computer outside the Apple network.
