I have Mac OS X Version 10.6.8
I don't have iCloud on my Mac because I need Lion to access. I don't have the $$ to spend on Lion right now.
My iPhone preferences for iCloud are what they set in the store:
mail is off
contacts is on
calendars is on
reminders is on
bookmarks is on
notes is off
On iTunes on my iMac, I have the following for my iPhone on the Summary Tab:
Backup to this computer
Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected
Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi
Sync only checked songs and videos
On Info Tab:
Sync Contacts - All contacs
Sync Calendars - All calendars
All apps are checkmarked
I have a few albums checked that I wanted on my phone
I don't have anything selected in the Movies, TV Shows, or Photos tabs.
Does this help?

You don't have $29?
You need Lion to make use of iCloud on your Mac.
You can sync contacts and calendar events direct with the Address Book and iCal on your Mac via the iTunes sync process, but you cannot sync contacts and calendar events over the air with your iCloud account on your Mac since your Mac is not running Lion.
