Thank you for the information! I learned that I need first to update to a Snow Leopard, indeed, before I can download the digital Lion version. My current Macbook has these characteristics:
Processor: 2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Available disk space: 100 GB
I was thinking of upgrading from here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
How do I get 4GB memory, do I need to buy a new battery or simply an external driver will do? And something unrelated, it says shipping is free but is this only with respect to shipping within the US, do shipping costs apply for Europe?

First off, you don't need to install 10.6 to get up to 10.7. However, it does make it easier, in that you don't need to erase and install your system. 10.7 will erase and install on any supported system (including yours). Upgrading the RAM will optimize some applications. Regardless, read this tip, and see if you are really ready for 10.7: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2465

The reason as to why I chose to upgrade to Snow Leopard first is because in the link I provided it says that "to upgrade your Mac to OS X Lion, you must be running OS X Snow Leopard. If you have OS X v10.5 Leopard, purchase OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard now and install it on your Mac. Then buy OS X Lion as a digital download from the Mac App Store".
I think, for now, I would prefer to install the latest version of the Snow Leopard. If I understood correctly, it does not require me to erase my HD (I have backup, of course).

That's correct. Upgrading to Snow Leopard does not require an erase. And good for you with your backup.

Just following your good suggestions! I think the upgrade will solve this problem, indeed (or, rather, it is not a problem if I have Universal Access in German, as long as it is enabled) - once I make it and if I have more questions regarding that, I shall address this forum again.
I want to thank everyone in this thread for their immediate and continued assistance, especially a brody and BDAqua, I very much appreciate it! You've been brilliant and you can have this cake: http://cakesbyrosa.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/thank-you-all.jpg?w=450 Cheers!
