May 22, 2012 1:17 PM in response to Nielby scstables1,Okay. Niel, how do I upgrade it to OS X 10.4.11? Is there a download available here for this old operating system on the Apple site? I just have to get this working better as it is no fun having safari crash when trying to surf the web. And I hear people using firefox on these computers, is this a better option or not?
I am new to apples would like to know more. I am used to Windows (MS) operating systems.

May 22, 2012 1:19 PM in response to scstables1by Niel,★HelpfulYou need to buy Mac OS X 10.4 on DVD. Regardless of whether or not you upgrade the computer's OS, you're more likely to have success using the web with a browser such as iCab instead of Safari.

May 22, 2012 2:36 PM in response to Nielby scstables1,I'll try the iCab. Thanks.
BTW, what else can one do with these iBook laptops? Can components be upgraded easily to accomodate more sophisticated apple programs? Just wondering.
Thanks a bunch!

May 22, 2012 5:02 PM in response to scstables1by Ronda Wilson,★HelpfulThe first thing I would recommend is to install a 512 MB RAM module into the one user-accessible RAM slot.

May 22, 2012 6:03 PM in response to scstables1by scstables1,BTW I read somewhere that one has to upgrade the firmware before installing a new 512 MB ram module. What is firmware and how is this done?

May 23, 2012 8:27 AM in response to scstables1by Ronda Wilson,That information is incorrect. There are no firmware updates available for that iBook model.

The only iBooks that require firmware updates are the older colored models.

I just don't want to get into trouble when adding new hardware to an older computer and having it not recognize it. I remember when we added new hardware and memory to a 1995 IBM Aptiva back in 2000 and then after that the aptiva kept asking for a disk most everytime you would turn it on and it was a pain to try to re-boot it and hope it would skip asking and finish booting.
