How have you been doing the update, via WiFi or through iTunes?
Try doing a soft reset, hold both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, then try the update again...if it still fails try the alternate approach to updating and see if that helps.
Make sure all apps are dismissed...double click the home button, hold an app until all jiggle and have a red circle with a minus sign, touch the minus sign to dismiss each one.

Hello Maryland, I was there in October! The update download was through WIFI. I done the reset a number of times with no joy and no apps are active. Whats the alternate updating you suggested?

Alternate method is to connect to iTunes and update that way...the file will be much larger but may correct the problem you are having.

After many attempts to download through iTunes, I tried the direct method via Wi-Fi and it worked! First, reset the iPhone (hold the power and Home buttoms until the screen goes black, then keep holding until the Apple logo appears). Second, dismiss all other applications (hit Home twice, then press and hold any icon at the bottom of the screen until they blink and display red "-" signs; then hold each "-" sign until the app icon vanishes). Then go to Settings -> General -> Software Update. It took me about 5-6 minutes via Wi-Fi.
For what it's worth, I'm using an iPhone 3GS and had 5.1 installed prior to the 5.1.1 update. My iTunes is on a Mac G4 running OS 10.5.8. I don't know why the iTunes method didn't work, but even if it had worked, it would have taken half an hour or more to download the file.
