Greetings:

I'm really worried! I've got a manuscript to complete and every day I'm losing something to "Terminal." It's some weird sci-fi program that I don't need or want. I spent hours typing, did a "save" and all that remained of 12 pages was a small black box. What's happening?

I tried trashing Terminal but it won't go away. Is it a virus? Does anyone know how I can get rid of this fiend?

Please answer before it takes over my computer - - cookie978(at)aol.com.

Sharon C.

PS: I have OSX 10.5.8, Leopard

Hi Sharon, try dragging that file to the Apps icon that you used to create it to open it.

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions...

    Reset Launch Services...

    Reboot.

I don't understand exactly what you are doing nor the sequence of events you are performing.

Do things "go wrong" when you log in?  Or launch a browser?  Or launch an editor?  Or launch something else?  Or while currently running one of those applications?

Also post what OS you are running (Snow Leopard?  Lion?).

Don't rebuild launch services now.  Not enough details is known whether to justify that.

Some context is needed here to try to diagnose your problem.

Truthfully, I don't know what I did to launch Terminal, but it seems to happen when I'm "saving" while using  Text or Pages. The document suddenly turns black--and tiny and there's nothing there but a black box. (I guess you've assumed by now that I'm no techie.)

On thing I noticed was when I was trying to do a cut & paste of some text on a website and it wouldn't work. I tried too many times, I think, because Terminal appeared.

If I knew what I was doing I would stop, but I have no warning when it will appear.

Post the files you see in the following places:

    your login items

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents (in your home directory)

    /Library/LaunchAgents

    /Library/LaunchDaemons

    /Library/StartupItems

Whatever APP you used to create the Manuscript, drag the file to the icon for that APP.

Great to hear, now Save or Save as anew copy to Documents or such!
