I don't remember doing this in the last few days, but I must have updated to 10.6. Just launched iTunes and the Library comes up blank/ new - it created a new one. I Option + launched to navigate to my existing Library (on external hard drive) and it is grayed out, iTunes will not recognize it.

Any suggestions thank you. Please don't tell me I have to recreate my hundreds of playlists out of my thousands of songs.

EDIT: The iTunes applications shows the date last modified as several months ago. I actually did not upgrade recently, I just launched it today and it created a new Library for some reason. My usual Library xml file is grayed out.

Not sure if my concern is similar, however about the same time as upgrading to 10.6 a sginificant chunk of my library disappeared from Itunes, therefore I added the library again from my xml file and now find that I have over 50% of my library duplicated. I know that the answer is to remove duplicate trcaks but when this is over 70Gb of music It will take forever & a day to remove this duplicate tracks manually. I cannot find in any debates a quicker process for doing this. Yes I could live with this but my iPod cannot take the increase in size!

Any assistance here from the Apple Discussion Community?

I'm having this same problem. Just reinstalled my machine, copied my itunes library back to the original place as I usually would and itunes empty. Doesn't see that there is a library there at all. My itunes library .itl file is also greyed out.

    Any help here?

Okay, finally figured out what had happened here.

Had partitioned my drive so that my DATA is on one partition and the OS is on the other.  iTunes installed on the OS partition - as you would expect - and created a ~/Music/iTunes directory within the OS parition under my user id.

However, when I reconfigured iTunes to point to my old library in my DATA partition, instead of recognising the library files and using them, it overwrote them with the newly created empty .itl and .xml files.

Fortunately - before doing the reinstall (even though I had the DATA on a separate drive) I did a backup.  I copied the old .itl and .xml files over the top in the DATA partition and all was well.

Christopher - have you ever backed up your itunes library files?  I assume you've fixed this by now or recreated everything?  If you have an old backup, try overwriting the new files.
