Q: another device on the network is using your computer's IP address

Hello,

I have macbook air 11"  mid 2011 and suddenly few days ago it started to kwep giving me this message when I was connected to a wifi network. Other devices on the network dont have such problem and I tried also to use other networks and it gives me the same message on every one of them. I have also tried to 'renew DHCP lease' in network settings.

This is what the computer keeps doing:

1. I turn on the wifi and computer connects on the network. It is fully connected and I can even use the internet for a few seconds

2. Then the message pops up that another device onthe network is using my computers IP adress (192.168.0.100).

3. The wifi icon on the taskbar changes to "!" and there is "alert: no internet connection"

4. Then the wifi disconnects from the network and starts searching fora new network, finds the same and connects to it with the adress 192.168.0.101 and goes to step 1 and iterates the adresses 192.168.0.x+1

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

    1. Make sure your MBA has "Using DHCP" selected in the Network System Preferences.
    2. Turn off all devices on your Intranet (including the MBA).
    3. Unplug your Router and let it sit for a few minutes
    4. Replug your Router.
    5. Start your MBA first, then start other devices.

If the problem STILL occurs, someone has setup your network Router and/or the devices with fixed IP addresses. They should be using DHCP.

Thanks for reply Chris but I did it and it didn't help.

And I don't think that MBA has static IP because everytime I connect to the network MBA has different IP. It does the same on all wifis I join. (I tried 4 so far)and because the MBA is usually the only device on the home network and still it says that there's other device with the same IP addres, then it gives itself another IP and again it says that there's other device with the same IP therefore I think that there's some bug, where MBA looks on the IPs of all devices on the network if there isnt any one that's same as his own and when he finds out that there is, he doesnt know that it's his own IP or something like that.

I hope I said it so anyone can understand what I wanted to say :-D

Check to see if your Router is assigning IP addresses based on your MAC address.

Good detective work!  In your Parallels preferences, see how the network connection is configured.  See if it is bridged or shared (NAT).  Just switch and try again.

Before the problem occured I got it set to "shared network", but when I was playing CS on LAN I couldn't see any servers so I tried the types of network sharing one by one until I came to one that worked and it was type "default adapter" ... and that was the case of the problem ... now I switched it back to "shared network" and everything goes OK.
