The questions are:
What is the document?
What version of Pages?
What version of OSX?
Have you updated them all?

I have the same problem as Haydenfromca above.
In my case, since I updated my computer 6mths ago I can no longer open documents I created before updating, nor can I open pages documents sent from other people. I can only save and reopen new pages documents I have created.
I have Pages 2.0.2, OSX 10.6.8

That is I take it Pages '06? Which is a bit long in the tooth.
I'm trying unsuccessfully to find the minimum requirement for OSX 10.6, but yours may not be compatible with Snow Leopard.
Your contacts are no doubt using either Pages '08 or Pages '09 which as later versions can open yours but you can not open theirs.
Updating from Pages '06 is a no brainer IMHO.

I hadn't realized my Pages was so far behind, I'll update it ASAP.
Thanks for your help,
