I have seen some ibooks (childrens books) with read aloud abilities. I know you have to do some programming but what program do you use to edit the code, can you preview it in ibooks (on ipad) if you modify the code, and is there a non-programming way to add audio/speech to your ibooks through ibooks author? Does anyone know the process or what steps and programs needed to add the read aloud feature to an ibook? (I know there are many others out their who would like to know the answers to these questions). Thanks.

Also, I have HD images (2000x1462) for my ibook in ibooks author and when I preview it on an ipad 2, it downsizes it to regular quality (like 1400x1200 ish). Since I don't yet own an iPad 3, do the images stay HD quality when an ibook (from ibooks author) is viewed on an iPad 3?

iPad, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Read aloud -- Can you reach this video in the store? View in iTunes57:07

As for your HD/new iPad images, what is the resolution? Try 264 dpi - and see Optimizing performance in your iBooks Author books

is there any info out their that takes you step by step on how to make a fixed layout book with read aloud?

That link that requires being a registered dev. Cost is USD $99 - which buys you tons of additional resources, and in your case seems like a bargain - jump on it!

Correction: Registering as an Apple developer is free: https://developer.apple.com/programs/register/

Hmmm.. I've never paid my $99 and could download the video you linked to just fine.

It is not difficult, but not easy. It is tedious! You need audacity - a free software you can download in audacity.com. Then word by word you need to get the timeline(using control B). After getting all the timeline for every word, you export the labels. Then you use the labels to fill out the .smil template. Feel free to ask more questions. I am glad to be of help.

    Thanks,

    Hello Jake -

If your book is done with iBooks Author, then, I don't think you can add read aloud feature there, as far as I know. You can only add read aloud in iBooks, not iBooks Author! All you can do in iBooks author is add an audio to every page...not as cool as auto read with word highlighting in iBooks.

Now, you have to reformat from iBooks author to iBooks, which requires some programming, but not as complicated as app. Do you have some web design or dreamweaver background?

Once you are done with the ibooks format, you can proceed with the read aloud code. It is just a simple code. It won't take a month to do so. And yes, there is a template.
