You use the thumbnails to copy and paste to another document

tried that but must not be doing the right thing as I still get only the words and no 'image' in a text box on the new sheet - do I have to tell it to do something with the text box or select an option other than 'copy'?

Then you have to tell us if you use word processing or layout documents or both and from which to copy to which you paste, so we have chance to try it out. I mostly use word processing documents.

You can command shift click on all the objects then copy and paste them into the other page. But you will have to do that one page at a time.
Copying the thumbnails should work, unless you are doing something else than what you are telling us.

I am using the Page 'layout' selection for this particular job but the same seems to apply when I am using the word processing option. I've imported (copy and pasted) a jpeg image and selected the option of 'object placement' with a 'wrap' option as well. I wanted to copy the A5 layout onto an A4 sheet for copying commercially

Click on one object in the layout:
command a (Select All) > Menu > Arrange > Group > Copy > Paste into new page

thanks for your advice but I still cannot get words and graphics to 'link' and fix for a copy and paste - it is an either or option - can copy the words or the graphics but not both. Won't work in two parts either as the 'arrange' 'group' selection makes a 'block' that can't be fitted together to replicate the original - looks as if I'll have to buy the MS Office for Mac if I wan't to do such work in the future! Somewhat disappointing really.

You didn't say that you had linked textblocks and that they were linked across pages.
I took it that you had single A5 page/s.
However I have just tested a couple of A5 pages created in Layout mode blank A5 templates. They contain both linked textboxes and shapes.
I click on the thumbnails, copy and paste them into both vertical and horizontal blank Word Processing/Layout template thumbnails and they paste perfectly with image inside shape etc.
Whatever it is you are doing, it is something else.

You could try change the paper size in Page setup to A4 and save the document under a new name. No need to copy and paste.

thanks for advice - whilst I was copying from the first thumbnail I was pasting it into the new document rather than the new document thumbnail - I have tried it and it works - great - many thanks.
