Q: Duplicate contacts only on my iPad from exchange server

Since IOs5 my iPad 2 suddenly starts to duplicate contacts from my exchange server (Office 365), if I go to my server I won´t see the duplicate, only in my iPad 2, if I delete the account and add it again they will dissappear but they will start duplicate one more time.

What can I do?, Does anyone have this issue?

iPad 2, iOS 5.0.1

My contacts were fine all weekend long until I started to "search" and now it seems that the contacts around where I was searching have triplicated.  the magic number is somewhere between 1017 and 1092.  It probably also depends on the amount of other information that you have stored in the contacts.

I do not feel there is a 'magic number', but you may be correct that you ned to have a large numer of contacts (1,100+) before the problem manifests itself.   A wild guess might be that there is an out-of memory condition within the searching function.

We have a handful of users on IOS devices, and only this user is seeing this issue...and it is frequent.  He is somewhere between 1,700 and 1,900 contacts.

Big problems over here still. Downsized my amount of contacts to 730, started all over again cleaned up everything on iphone and 365. Updated to latest IOS. Uploaded contacts again in fresh environment. But also in this case it's duplicating very fast over 100 contacts in two days. So magic number not in my phone...

BUT one thing that suprices me also, while nobody mentioned that within this forum: IT (AGAIN) DUPLICATES ALSO ON in my MS 365 Outlook???!!! (THUS SYCHRONIZES BACK TO EXCHANGE)

Does anybody know what Apple is doing about it?

Where can you report such a bug? and did anybody do that already?

    Thks, GeeLau

What do you mean: 'Uploaded contacts again in fresh environment'?

Are you syncing contacts from more than a single source location?   Do you have iCloud turned on? That is a different issue that what this thread is trying to diagnose.

Online 'AppleID' support was no help, really.

I submitted 'feedback' for the iPhone here. This was the support persons suggestion.

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/

I suppose if enough people provide a description of the issue - the development team may take notice.

    =====

Exchange/Office365.  No iCloud (Except findmyiPhone), no other accounts..

It appears to occur when using the contact 'search' funtion in the contact app or phone app on the iphone (or iPad)

    1) User uses contact search funtion by typing text into the search field  This works most of the time.

    2) Periodically, the search function sort of locks up - and instantly - the phone starts downloading - what looks like and entirely new set of duplicate contacts from the server.

    3) Duplicates are not created on the server (so far).  They appear on the mobile device only.

    4) Disabling the account on the phone, or simply turning off contacts and 'deleting' them on the phone and then turning contact sync on again resolves it temporarily.  When the search function crashes again, the same thing (dupes/trips) happens again.

    5) deleting the device and adding the account from Office365 and removing the accont on the iphone and setting it up again of course fixes it temporarily.  When the problem is encountered within the contact search function again... the same thing happens. again.

We have wiped the phone/pad before and it of course removed duplicates and a fresh clean copy is downloaded from the server.  A temporary fix. The contact search function - seems to me.. can trigger this at any time.

Thanks for posting this!!!  I have sent my feedback as a bug report!  If anyone else is seeing this, it would be great if you would submit a bug report also.  Hopefully the squeaking wheel will get fixed!

    Dear Spr1;

Fresh environment means a 365 outlook exchange account with all contactpersons deleted, all syncing disabled. Then again uploaded the original contact file with 730 unique names from a CSV-file. After that procedure I turned on the syncing in the Iphone. Also here No Icloud enabled...

Still it's stange that I'm the only one with duplicated records on the server as well....

Therefor turning off sync and turning it on again is not a (temperoray) workaround for me.

Anyone familiar with syncing the duplicates to the server?

I was having duplicate problem in my outlook but I discovered that problem was from Lync.  I turned off that "save my lync contacts to my personal folder in exchange" option and that has seem to help me.  I could tell it was Lync causing the problem because it updates the memo field with a date and time.

    This is my scenario..

One user, 2,997 contacts, sync`s on Windows Outlook, Mac outlook, Blackberry Enterprise Server, iPad, Mac Address Book, Mac iCal, everything at the same time.

    Having this

Exchange 2007/Windows SBS2008, the contacts once a month or every two months star to duplicate on devices and on the server.

Having Office 365 on trial period, the contacts start to duplicate only on iPad.

What I know, everyday, my contacts on outlook are changing the "modified field", I know that the iPad does something to the contacts, maybe when searching, that changes the "modified field", and this sometimes starts the whole duplication thing...

Had a user with over 80,000 contacts!!! In reality he had only 3,200. Problem seemed to get exponentially worse. Watched contact duplicate on screen in Outlook. Appears to happen randomly. Can see common create and modified dates when looking in Outlook modified custom view.

We have repeatedly deleted the duplicates (export, delete contacts, use 'remove duplicates' function in Excel, import).  Incidentally, found Outlook imports only 1,600 at a time (learned hard way). Now import in batches

Worst of all, at some point to email addresses were lost

Having just read this thread, we will keep contacts out of scope of his ActiveSync config on iPhone.  Have found problem appears randomly.  Can't find a trigger, but definitely see exponential worsening.  Feeling very disheartened (having gone through dup removing process at least three times), am seriously considering recommending return to BB for this user.

    iPhone 4s

    Exchange 2007

    Lync 2010

    Updated iOS

    Contacts: ~3,200

Assistant adds contacts via cardscan utility (ie in bulk sometimes)

    DoubtIT,

He´s goes a Tip to delete Duplicate contacts..... I was a master in exporting to Excel, finding the duplicated and remove them, but it seems that I always leave some duplicates or delete good ones... so.. I found a program that adds a script to your outlook and helps you identify and remove the duplicates in less than one minute.....

MAPILAB Duplicates Remover (http://www.mapilab.com/outlook/remove_duplicates/?dstr), it´s a time saver!!!!!

Another tip, if you use this tool, eliminate your duplicates, wait to make sure you sync into the server, and then, you found out that there are still some duplicated contacts in OWA, this means that there´s one or more damaged contacts in your user..... the only way I know you can fix this is.....

1.- In Exchange Manager, create a new database..

2.- Move that user to the new database and exclude damaged items

This way the user will have a nice clean profile..

    Best regards,

If you havent done so already, please go back to the original question and click on the link that says "I have this questions also".  Otherwise its much more difficult for Apple to really know how many people are experiencing this issue.

Anyone using Lync 2010 and are seeing duplicate contacts in your outlook, there is a setting in the Lync - Tools - Options - Personal - UNCHECK the "save my lync contacts in my personal contacts folder on the Exchange server.  This seems to mess with the memo field also and it also will duplicate contacts in Outlook.  I had this problem WITH my iphone duplicating and it appeared to be related, but now that I turned this off, I don't have a duplicate problem in outlook.

    Hi Lisa,

In my case I don't use Lync locale or on 365 but anyhow duplicates on the outlook exchange server. There must be also an other reason to explain this...

Did anybody got some feedback from Apple jet?
