I lost my playlists on iTunes when I had a disk crash, but I still have the playlists on my phone and would like to move those back up to iTunes to sync with other devices I have including a new iPad.

iPhone 3GS, iOS 5.1.1

A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:

I downloaded the software.  Thank you.  All my songs are still in my iTunes library, I have just lost the organizational structure of the playlists.  Do you know if I use this software, will it create duplicates of all those songs in my library?  That would not be a good thing.

Thanks again.  I got all my songs over (I think - it removed 10 or more duplicates in each playlist), but I am back in the ball game.

I did loose all the cover art that took some time to keep up with when I was building the playlists.  When I created the playlists from my iTunes Library the art came over with it.  No cover art came over from the iPhone when the software created the SharePod playlists,  even though it is all there.

Any suggestions?  There does not appear to be a way for the SharePod lists to grab the art that is already associated with the songs in my iTunes library.  At least I cannot find a way.  Is this going to be a manual process?

    Select the iPhone in iTunes.

Select the playlist on the iPhone in iTunes then right click - Export playlist.

Then you can File > Library > Import playlist into iTunes.

    Sorry.  I followed these steps.

Select iPhone on iTunes - successful

Select playlist on iPhone - could not find how I would do that.  I went to music tab after selecting phone, but no option exists to look at playlist that exists on phone.  Selecting the playlist at the bottom that was created by SharePod has an export command, but that file does not have any artwork in it so I don't know what good that would do and it is just asking me where I want to export it to on my hard drive.  Does not seem to be useful step.

You need to select the iPhone.

Click the grey disclosure triangle to the left of the iPhone name. This will show you the contents of the iPhone (including the playlists).

Sorry for being so obtuse.  I now find the playlists using your direction, but when I right click on the playlist folder it gives me an option to export not export playlist.  No real problem except the folder it is suggesting that I export it to is sysWOW64 which is a Windows system file I have no access to.

Taking the similar steps through the File/Library/Export Playlist command option takes me to the same save prompt.

Don't click on the playlist folder.

Click on a playlist and select Export.

This exports the playlist whcih you can then import into iTunes.

Note that it does not export the actual song files. It is only a list of songs.

You don't export to a file. You export to a folder/directory.

Just select a different directory, such as the desktop.

That exports a playlist from iTunes, not the iPhone.

Your patience has paid off in that I have now successfully moved my "Blues" playlist or a portion of it over to the Library.

The bad news here is that I fear we have not been working on the same problem.  Earlier in the thread, I indicated that I had used SharePod to accomplish the same thing.  I now have a Blues playlist and a Blues (SharePod) playlist in my iTunes library - no big deal.  However, what I was trying to do was get the associated artwork over into iTunes, so that I could easily move that over to my iPad with art attached.  This was all originally in my iTunes file, but was apparently purged in my disk crash that started this whole issue.

In many ways I wish I had seen your suggestion earlier for bringing the playlist over inside Apple commands instead of a 3rd party.  You have been very patient, but I still don't know how to get the artwork off of my iPhone and back into the central iTunes library where it belongs.
