Do you have the actual error message or number?
As a start I would run the permissions and library repair from Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics
If that doesn't fix it do a disk repair from Disk Utility.
Finally you could remove the file. To locate it do:
In Finder find the aperture library (Aperture Library.aplibrary)
Right click the library and select Show Package Contents
Select the Thumbnails/10rfEeaET9Ckt7jpxyGV5s folder
remove the AP.Thumbnails file
If you still have problems post back

Thanks for the response. I tried the permissions and library repair, but the back-up quit again after each try. I found the suspect file and deleted it, and now the back-up goes all the way to the end. So... it looks like you've solved my problem.

Glad you got it fixed.
You still might want to do the Disk Utility disk repair. It won't harm anything and if the problem is the spot on the disk where that file was stored rather then the file it could prevent it from happening again.
