I have photos everywhere. What's the best way to get them organized on my new Mac?

I just bought my first Mac. I was completely fed-up with PC's. I think the reasons why are well illustrated in my problem. I have this folder now on my desktop. It contains a myriad of different folders which whittle down to different folders. There are a ton of photos in these folders and they are organized by date within their respective folders, but there are quite a few and they are absolutely everywhere in this mess.

The reason for this is a bunch of problems with a bunch of PC's. For every PC which gave me trouble, I ended up with a pile of folders in another folder containing the data from that PC. As a result, I have "old-computer", "old-desktop", "old=PC" and on and on.

What I would really like is a great simple solution. I would love to have a program that I could direct at this mess and it would pull all the photos out (even if it made a copy) and put them somewhere where I could organize them easily. Any thoughts?

Thank you!
