How do you delete a clip and leave a blank?

I have a sequence and I want to cut it down, but there are titles and music floating above it, so when I go to cut a clip out, any title or music which is linked to it, disappears as well.  I don't want that to happen.  So I can slide those elements out of the way then delete the clip, but that takes them out of sync and is cumbersome.  I want to delete the clip, but leave everything else in place, which would leave a blank space.  That way noting gets deleted but the clip.  Then I can close the gap or insert a different clip or whatever, but not lose any music or title that happened to start on that clip that I just deleted.  Is there an easy way to do this?
