Does anyone know how to start Java for a the Mac?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

    If you previously disabled it via Java Preferences (in Utilities) then reenable it there just by clicking Restore Defaults.

    I have tried this and it does not work. Also Mountain Lion removed the enable option box. Any idea how to restore that enable option? Thanks.
