I see no reason why it wouldn't work, but don't have a Win external to try. At least it should do no harm to try it.

Do you find Win8 useful at all???

Check the Parallels site, but I think you could connect

your external using a SATA to USB adapter (or an external

enclosure) and us Parallels importer to completely import

your old machine into a virtual machine.  I know this can

be done from a functioning PC to Mac.  Don't really see

why it wouldn't work with just a drive.

The result should be a new virtual machine in Parallels on

your Mac that nearly duplicates your old PC.

thanks, I have to say I am an old guy with a hand crank brain so some of this doesn't come easy. I gave it a try, useing a usb port and it worked fine. I am able to view the files  both doc and pictures, as I am an artist the pics were my main concern. I will still have to figure out how to " create a vertual machine " or store a copy on windows 8, the computer asked if I wanted to open in Mac but I didn't try  as fear of crash and burn held me back. Thanks again for taking the time to encourage me with your help.

I don't know enough yet to tell you anything about windows 8, I haven't figured where Parallel  ends and widows begins!

    Thanks again

Well, just ask away, we're not here to help peoplethat know how already!

I have many Virtual Machines in Paralles, VMWare, & VirtualBox, including Win* in Parallels, but I consider it the worst OS since... wait, there is no since... it is the worst ever!

what os do you consider the worst ever, win 8 or mac x lion or? I need to figure out how to save a copy of my files to my mac mini,  I sold a painting to a guy today that suggested I just use the external drive and not save a cpy on my mac. He also strongy suggested I buy a second external drive, a three tera bit, to back up the first. and do regular back ups that I should date so as not to get them confused. any thoughts on that?

    Worst... Win 8

    2nd worst Mountain Lion/10.8.x

    3rd worst Lion 10.7.x

    4th worst Windows ME.

5th worst, geez, I'm not sure!

As far as Windows goes, I think more things have gone backwards since XP, W7 improving on Vista, but...

As far as OSX goes, more steps backwards than forwards since Tiger/10.4.11

Even Linux is going backwards now... & it wasn't always that easy to start with, it's outdone it's usefullness trying to incorporate the worst features of Windows &

    OSX!

I totally agree on the Backup thing, but which exact 3 TB are you thinking of, many are worthless & unreliable???

And BTW, I think Time Machine is the worst backup solution ever invented, but if you have trouble using a TV Remote, it's better than a swift kick in the pants!

Thanks for that positive input, I thought it was just me. It seems to me that the people that are writeing the soft ware are so immersed in the language and culture that they are compleatly out of touch with users that don't speak the language. The terms they use in help just confuse me and when I do what they say I don't see what they tell me I should . If I type  virtual machne it will tell me no results for that. there is no icon or mention of it in control panel or programs etc, They apparently still think that it is 1980 and anyone useing a computer is a tech buff and has time to read up on the latest everything about computers. Me I paint 15 hrs a day and use my computer for bussiness. I can't find a way to save as on mac or put things in a file other than on the desk top, I didn't see select all or a save copy on win 8 after I opened my files from the external drive. I don't want a cleaver way of doing things on my computer, I want a simple straight forward way. Why for example does the spell check not work or exist on this site. I learn to work a certain way and they scrap it compleatly in the next version saying its better when in fact it slows me down to relearn just in time for next new version ! other than that I have no opinion on these things!

Ah yes, sad state of affiars in the world, what users want is out, what increases the bottom line is the only thing that counts any more.

At the time Atari was killing itself, I researched whetjer Apple or MS best supported past OSes, sadly & very mistakenly I chose Apple... heck, both Apple & MS support XP far better than Apple supports 4 OSX versions since XP came out!???

IMHO, Apple could allow us to run any previous Mac OS App that ever existed for less space than a crazy 35.2MB Keyboard update!!!

Heck, if my Ataris can handle any KB & 20 or more Function keys in 100 Bytes... why would Apple need 355.2 MB to make it less usefull???

You may not believe this, but themost important computers to my Biz are Atari TT/030s & Falcons, main;y becauase I can do what I want to to do by wtiting my own Apps, not what Apple or MS thinks I want to do.
