Q: Iphone 4 people cant hear me during calls.

I recently have been having issues with people hearing me when i call them or i receive their calls. My sound works perfectly through Facetime and thru mic apps. What gives? Do I need to return my iphone to have this fixed? Resetting has not fixed the problem. =(

Hello. I had the same problem most people here are describing, with an iPhone 4 32 GB: when making calls, the other party was not able to hear me. If I tapped the back of the phone several times sometimes the other party was able to hear me for a few moments. Today, I also found out that tapping the top where the ambient mic is also made it work for a few moments. The mic worked with recording apps, like Memo or Skype, it was just with calls it was not working. The same thing happened when using the iPhone's headphones or a bluetooth headset.

I think this started happening after I accidentally dropped the phone about a week ago. I have been using this same phone for 1 year, 3 months, and never had an issue like this before (I'm having problems with the home button, but that's another story).

So after reading a few posts on this thread, I decided to try to open the phone, as some persons suggested, and disconnecting some of the cables and connecting them again. I chose to do this as it says on the Apple website my iPhone's warranty is already expired and seeking help with my local carrier (one of the official iPhone carriers in my country, Honduras) would be a dead end. And I had some experience opening and repairing my previous phone, an iPhone 3G, and I had already replaced a broken rear glass panel on this same phone, so that gave me confidence.

So, following some guides on iFixit for opening the iPhone4, I was able to reach the connectors for the headphone jack and the ambient mic. I unplugged those, firmly plugged them back in, reassembled the phone, and tried it out. So far it seems to be working. I have made several calls, and I don't have to do any taps or anything like that. It is working normally so far. I have read that some people who tried this have the problem return after some time, so I'll be testing this out and update this post if this fix is permanent.

I wanted to post this to contribute to this thread and to let other people who might be having this problem know what worked for me.

One tip: if you are going to go ahead and open the phone, no need to do all the steps on the guide at iFixit for doing this. Just remove the rear panel, then the screws over the wifi antenna at the top, remove the wifi antenna and disconnect and reconnect the cables. No need to take out the battery or anything else. And be careful to put the screws back on the same order, on the corresponding place. And try to avoid as much as possible touching any the parts directly with your hands.

    Best regards.

    Hi guys, I'm from Brazil.

I wish I could fix it doing the way you told in video, but after a few tries I had no success.

Now I am looking for a place to send my phone in order to fix it. If you have any tips where to send it (even out of my country).

    Thanks for your help.

I still have this problem, even after pluggin-out cables under wifi and plugging-in back and even after putting cardboard as shown on the videos to fix this problem. Which flex cable do I need to replace for this to permanently solve this issue???

Sorry if I am repeating a solution but got bored at page 20

The way I fixed this was going to: "Settings" > "General" > "Accessibility" - Then turn on "Hearing Aid Mode" under "Hearing" apparently this disables the noise canceling microphone.

It worked for me - Let me know if it sorts out any of your problems too!

    Thanks

    James

After i sent my iPhone 4 into warranty i saw a improvemnt and the problem does not appear as often (daily) as before, but this voice problem still exists. Before i sent my Iphone4 to warranty this problem was daily but only on 3G network, if i switch to 2G then it works. I think this is a software problem and Apple did not found a solution so far

That my friend is not working, tested on my iPhone4 neverlocked, i`m not using JB. Having the same problems even on 2G and of course on 3G.

I`m sending my phone back to waranty.

Good post.  I will look into this.

I'm on my second iPhone 4 (32GB).  My first one had this problem.  Of coourse the Genius bar has *Never* heard of this before so I was left to purchase a replacement for £120.  A few months later (today), I was back at the Genius bar with the exact same problem as my first iPhone.  Again, this problem is unheard of so after a diagnostics check (passed) and a restore (no effect) and verifcation that the SIM works in other phones my only recourse was/is another replacement for another £120.  I decided to pass.  I own 3 Macbook pros, 2 mini's, 2 AppleTVs, 2 iPhones, a iPad3, a Time Capsule, an Airport Express and countless iPods (my house is an Apple Shrine).  I now also own an Android phone.  Its definitely not a better device, but it does actually work as a phone.

Maybe I'll be back for the 5 but after the cost, time, and the way they treat loyal customers I'm not so sure.

After sending my iPhone4 to warranty the second time, I received a brand new iPhone 4 replacement. I just hope that this one works okay

    Hello,

I have the same problem on my iPhone 4 16GB

Apple ask me that this is a software problem so i tried different solutions:

    - restore phone: not working

    - plug/unplugg headphone: working sometimes but not fixing the problem

    - use Hearing Head Mode: working 2/3 days and after the problem still appears

I precise that vocal memo are working fine on my phone, this is just during a call

And after several months of problem i finally found a solution !

This is not a software problem, this comes from the hardware. All you need to fix it is a screwdriver and a cardboard. The solution is described here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jhWxYTVxe4

This works fine for me and i don't have any problem since several weeks (mainly i don't have to pay for repairs or a new phone)

I hope it will help you

Hi there I just experienced this problem today.. I had made a phone call this morning everything was fine. 2 hours later I made another call and could not hear anything. They called me back and I kept saying hello etc.. We texted and they said they could hear me. So I turned my phone off still did not work. Rebooted it. Recorded my voice and that seemed fine. Made another call and it only worked when I pressed speaker.

So searched it up and saw where it said restore it... no way I was doing that... take it back to att... maybe. Then I read to use the dust air compressor SOOOO I tried that and it worked barely as in I was pressing my phone up so hard to my ear to hear it... I sprayed more and I thought I messed it up pretty bad bc I didn't hear anything at all lol Then I see the youtube videos taking it apart... Don't have the tools to do that. SO I turned my phone off again and sprayed the top speaker close then a few inches away and kept my phone off for about 5 minutes.

It works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can definitely hear it better than before but its not as good. But hey its working. Hope this helps someone out =]
