Q: Restore Disk For iBook g4 (2004) and iMac g5 (2004) and help on buying a computer.

I purchaced an iBook from Newegg.com back in 2010 and I think its time that I sell this computer and upgrade to a nicer computer.  But whenever I recived my iBook I never got any kind of disks to restore It.  I am also having the same problem with the iMac g5, purchased it off of ebay and never got any disk to restore it and I'm also wanting to sell it.  I'm planning on using the money to buy a new computer.  I am 13 so money is kinda tight my age whenever your parents are not planning to help you get money so I was hoping someone had any tips on if I could restore it without a disk or where I could get one cheaper. Another thing, What do you think each computer would be worth? Do you think $150 for the iBook and $250 for the iMac is a good deal? I'm kinda in this on my own so I would really apreciate some help!

    Hello multisammmmy

Without the restore disk or a copy of Mac OS X  you can't really restore it. Maybe you know someone that has some restore disk you could use? If all fails you could just create a new account and delete your old account, effectively restoring it to a clean account for resale. I can't really comment on the price. It depends on what iBook, iMac model your selling and it's condition. Good luck

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

You could check on eBay to see what your Mac models are selling for by checking out "Completed Items" for each of them.

Tip for future reference: I never buy a used Mac unless the original system discs are included in the purchase.

okay thanks! My neighbors have the disks and stuff and I've already tried those. They didn't work because I do not have an Intell Based computer and all they have are the updated versions. And I have deleted my accounts but none of the stuff goes away like it should. I have deleted my documents folder and those things.  And I was reading up on it, someone said delete your documents folder and reset your disk utilitys settings. I tried looking up how to and I cannot figure out how to work that. Can you please explain?

    Hello,

What you need to do is go to system preferences (Apple Logo > System Preferences)

Then 'Users' and create a new user  (say "user") Make sure you select that user as administrator

Once created, log out of the current user ( Apple logo > Log Out 'username')

Log back in as the new user you just created (Say "user")

Go back to System Preferences and Users and delete your old account. (account you don't require, but not your new one) Make sure you select delete home folder. By selecting the delete home folder will clear out all your old files you don't want.

Here is a toutrial on creating an account (Just incase)

    http://www.macinstruct.com/node/399

Deleting is simple, just select the user and then the ' - ' (minus) at the bottom of the username window in 'users'

After you done that you should only have one user active, a home folder now cleared of any data.

If the new owner wants to recreate their own username, that can do the same thing.

I've had to do this a few times when buying used Mac's which don't come with a restore disk. I do agree with Ronda, I don't buy now any used Mac without the restore disk, however not everyone seems to keep them when they resale. ( Like they don't for PC laptops)

    Best of luck.
