Q: iPhoto's 'Manage my Places' has stopped showing map and pins!!!?

I am using iPhoto '11 version 9.2.3.

Recently I stupidly decided to undertake the task of adding location info to all of my extensive library, spanning approx 15 years and a ridiculous amount of individual locations.

Anyway this task will now eat away at me until i have completed it, (or something similarly unnecesary takes over)

So, i've been at it for a few weeks now, but all of a sudden today (haven't been on it for a few days so may have started a little while back) i am now unable to edit the size of the 'vicinity' around a pin.

I am selecting 'Manage my Places' tool from the 'Window' menu at the top of the screen as i was before. But now, when the list of my places comes up, to the right, there is no longer a map with the pins from the hilighted 'place'.... it is just grey as the pic below shows.....

Screen Shot 2012-05-29 at 00.12.32.png

This is now hugely frustrating for me, as you can imagine. Does anyone know anything about this? or are having the same issue?

Thanks in advance for anticipated response.....

    My iPhoto '09 (8.1.2) library has stopped showing all imagery for Places. The pins are still there, but all of Google's terrain, satelite and hybrid views are showing a blank grey.

    Have Apple stopped supporting Places in iPhoto '09?

    There's a spate of these reports on here in the last 24/48 hours for both 09 and 11.

    As there has been no update to either version, and as this doesn't affect everybody, I would suspect some sort of caching issue somewhere along the internet.

    Let Apple know it's happening

    Actually I've got this problem too, in the last couple of days, with a new copy of 9.2.3

    It looks like iPhoto is looking for the map and isn't finding it, as the "Done" button is cycling.

    All the other windows where maps are needed show the map, though I had difficulty in getting places fixed and remembered.

    @Terrence,

    Besides these two threads, did you find any others on the topic of the disappearing maps in Manage My Places?  I have a work around, but also indications that the problem is specific to my account, and information in other threads might help to determine the cause.

    @Sam,

    Can you give more information about your setup, preferably in the above mentioned thread?  As I say there, the Apple Care agent to who I spoke is trying to arrange a telephone call with an engineer, and I have given him that thread as "homework" for his colleague.

    @Reuben,

    I see you're experiencing what seems like a similar problem with the previous major version of iPhoto.  Does the workaround given in the thread above work for you?

    Regards,

    Richard

    @Richard @Sam etc

    I also have the same problem, fixed by turning wireless on and off again, but map disappeared once iPhoto is closed and reopened, even on a different file.   I recently upgraded iPhoto, but I never used Manage my places before so I don't know whether I had the problem with the old version.

    Yes, that's just the point.  Disconnecting from then reconnecting to the Internet is only a work around, not a solution, because the problem returns

    Strangely, if you create a new account and launch iPhoto there, Manage My Places displays a map centered around where it thinks you are, and you can import a photo, assign it a place and see the place in Manage My Places.  So the problem has something to do with the account in which iPhoto is run; however, it doesn't matter whether it's a standard account or an admin one.  It also doesn't matter how many photos are in the iPhoto library.  Create a new iPhoto library in the same account in which you are experiencing the problem, and you will find that you have the same problem, even though the library is empty, and even after importing and "placing" one photo.

    Same exact problem, except I've been added location information for two years, included a cross-country trip! Very frustrating. Your screen-shot shows exactly the issue I'm having too.

    I've submitted a bug report to Apple through the feedback form.

    I've tried clearing my preferences files and cache and still have the problem.

    It's VERY annoying... Apple, please help!

    @MacFishy,

    I had the same problem with IPhoto '09  8.1.2   The maps in Places disappeared on June 2nd.

    I was able to fix Places by DOWNLOADING SAFARI and RE-INSTALLING.

    A Best Buy Geek Squad tech fixed my Places on June 3rd.  He told me the problem was with Safari, not IPhoto. However, I don't know what he did to fix the problem.  (He could not have re-installed Safari without me knowing)

    Unfortunately, the maps disappeared a week later.  I used the Geek Squad again, but could not contact the same tech.  Several techs tried, but could not fix Places.  The last tech directed me to Apple.com.

    I was able to restore the maps for the individual pictures from discussions on Apple.com by turning the WiFi off and on.  The large world map did not return.

    On June 24th, I went to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store.  Interestingly they were unaware of the Places problems.  When I mention that a tech said the problem was Safari, not IPhoto, he suggested that I try downloading Safari and re-installing.   Well that worked!  So far it is still okay.

    I hope others will find this helpful,

    Peggy

    As others have said, all you need to do to fix this problem is go into Safari > Reset Safari... and basically just reset all the items in the list. Sure, you'll get logged out of all your website accounts, but iPhoto should get its maps imagery back.

    Hi all

    That doesn't help if you aren't using Safari.  I'm using Firefox 13.0.1.  I don't understand why its a browser problem.

    Did that today Terence.

    iPhoto 9 (8.1.2) - location maps not showing for individual photos, but Manage My Places works normally (maps showing).

    Resetting internet connection and deleting Google cookies makes no difference.

    Open Safari and delete google.com and google.es (I'm from Spain) cookies. Close Safari. Open iPhoto and Places works fine. If you login on Google again, should repeat the process
