Q: I am unable to add an AirPort Express to a Time Machine.  My iMac came with AirPort Utility 6.0 but have been unable to find how to add a WDS network

I am unable to add an AirPort Express to my Time Machine to boost my wireless range.  My Mac has AirPort Utility 6.0 and I am unable to find how to add a WDS network.

Please download and install v5.6 of the AirPort Utility. Both versions can co-exist on your OS X Lion Mac and v5.6 is more full-featured allowing you to configure a WDS.

I was able to mount v5.6 and still am confused.  Through trial and error I was once able to mound both my my Time Machine as a "create a wireless network" but I was not able to find the pane to create a WDS network.  During my hunting I once found a window that showed me the Airport Express I was trying to use in the network. Going through the setup process I was able to get the Airport Express added to the system go green lights on both units but no ethernet connection.  Since trying to solve this problem I finialy gave up and reset the time machine to factory seting not I am back to the beginning and can not find the window to allow other devices in the wireless chain.  HELP Please my 14 yr old daughter complains that he iPhone single is weak in her room and she has to use her MacBook Pro.  Life is tough being 14.

If your AirPort Express is also a 802.11n model, then you want to use the "extend" method. If it is an 802.11g version, then the WDS would be correct. Both links should provide you with the necessary steps. If you still need assistance, please post back.

You may find, regardless of which method you use, to temporarily connect the Express to the TC by Ethernet. Once the setup is completed, you can then disconnect it and move it to the desired location.

That did it when I hooked it up directly to ethernet I was able to set it up and move it to after.

    Thank you very much
