Did the 10.7.4 update on my 2006 24" iMac. Now, the only screen resolutions I have to choose from are 1920 x 1200 and 960 x 600. The higher ones makes text/screen too small to comfortably read. The lower res totally *****. How do I fix this?

You around the sixth post in these forums with the same problem.  It appears that update screwed up some people and the only solution I can recommened is revert to what you had prior to the update.

...and complain to apple of course.

To fix this requires xcode (probably only temporarily) The video below explains step by step how to fix this.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zE8agGL1Whw

    Here's the gist:

Download xCode. (Check to see if the folders below exist first as xcode is very large, and if they do, you can skip this step)

Go to  Macintosh HD > Developer > Applications > Graphics Tools > Quartz Debug.

In the toolbar at the top click Window > UI Resolution. Log-out, full restart, the go to display and you can choose the resolutions as before, plus a few HiDPI options.

    drrobotnik,

Thanks for the POST,  yours is currently the only post from what I've seen so far that provides a bonafide workaround other then installing an entire new OS.  Have you yourself verified that performing this will BRING BACK the other supported resolutions?

    Again, thanks for the Post.

Yep. I'm running a late 2009 model macbook pro connected to an external 30in Dell monitor and it worked for me.

    Glad I could help,

    Cheers!

Good to know!  Unfortunately I'm unable to give you the coveted "Solved", because as my luck would have it I was preparing that system (late 2006 iMac) as a hand me down when the 10.7.4 update came in.  I just shipped it an hour ago. However, if an 10.7.5 is not in the cards for a fix, I will probably remote into it in the future to set it right.

I applaude you again for being the first to provide a solution, and I hope others are not far behind from finding this thread (and verifing).

    Cheers!

Thank's  drrobotnik for your helpful advise.

I still wonder why the Apple expert decided in their wisdom to take away  my other 10 screen setup and resolution.

just because it is possible ?

It's a bug.  In my opinion what is being suggested with xcode is a workaround.  Not a true "fix".  Obviously everyone with this problem should not have to use xcode's quartz debug.

My apologies to everyone that may get to this thread via my POSTs on others with same issue earlier.

Yes,  I chose my wording badly.  I just wanted to put some words in my message other than just a link with no explanantion given (as I did on my first).  So I just quickly jotted down a few words with few letters.

OBVIOUSLY, the onus is on Apple.  This is not a fix be any means, but if works a great workaround for those with an appetitie to do it.

I fear, escepecially since I've read somewhere along the way researching this issue that Apple has known about this issue in pre-releases in Dec.   If  (BIG IF)  true, writing is on the wall this won't get addressed.  At least not in any resemblance of an acceptable timeframe by us.

Apple still pushed it though, and unless we work for the company writing the code, we will never know if they did it knowing this was going to happen.  (Just 3rd party accounts of posts like this that claim they read it some where).

Only affects 6 year old models?  Of which coincedently happens to be the cut off for Mountain Lion.  I don't like my odds on a true fix coming any time soon.

Mention about knowledge of issue prior to 10.7.4 release:

Re: imac only has 2 resolutions

Not sure where I conjured up my Dec reference,  and for some reason I can't edit it above.  Tried but failed.

Yeah, I was going to challange you on your previous post about that Dec. date since people only started posting about this problem since the 10.7.4 update.  But I am glad you put a better clearification in that post anyhow.  Thanks.

Discarding customer who bought the product 5 years ago may be a new business model.

It is but understandable if a new selling item is a huge money maker.

A clearer screen resolution is better for a smaller size of the iPhone etc

Speaking of clearer resolution you really need to use a larger font when posting.

This is the font closely resembling my, after updating to .4, menu bar and window font size which has only two option either fat and unsightly, or smaller than under .3
