Q: my iMac won't recognise sandisc ultra cf8gb card reader

I have an Imac 21 inch  screen. I need help to transfer photos. I have tried two different cardreaders with a Sandisk ultra compact flash card. In turn, I have connected each reader to each of the  usb  ports at the back of the computer and in every case nothing happens. Nothing appears on the screen. Nothing appears in IPhoto.  How do I get the computer to download the photos?

Thanks

Ray.

Do those cardreaders require a driver and if so is there an up-to-date driver for your system?

    Thanks X43424X.

Took an easier way out and borrowed my mate's card reader which worked , But the only way I knew it was working was when I inadvertently moved my imac cursor into the address bar and the spinning wheel came up. Then into Devices and the Reader was shown.!! Next time I will either use a smaller card (this was 8 GB) and use the slot which has never failed me or buy a Reader the same as my mates.

Ok.  Glad you "solved" the (immediate) problem.

Do you have your Finder preferences set to show external drives? FWIW, card readers do not require any drivers; however, when I got my Sandisk Extreme cards, my old card reader was too slow for the faster card. You might want to check to make sure your reader can handle faster speed cards. The capacity of the cards should not matter either - I regularly use 4, 8, 16, and 32 GB Extreme SDHC cards without a problem (but, again, with an ultra fast reader that actually came with the cards).

Thanks Babowa. Finder preferences are now set accordingly and problem solved.!

When talking about card size I was referring to dimensions and not capacity. The Flash card I have is of a size too large for the slot. Have since discovered cards of the same capacity and a smaller size. . You live and learn.

We'd need some information: model/year of your Mac?

    What type of card?

    What have you tried?

And, please, do not use all caps - it is considered shouting and also makes it difficult to read.

Okay, here is some info on the built-in card reader:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3553

It's for SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards. Yours is a different card, so have you tried a USB card reader that will be compatible with your type of card? I use one of those all the time. They should be available (and very inexpensive) in many stores - ask what type you need for your card, make sure it's USB, put in your card, plug it into a USB port and the icon for it should show up on the desktop.

    The Sony or Fuji?

You say it works with the Fuji.

I'm not sure what to tell you about the Sony - I don't use any Sony products. Regardless, it should work. If the reader works with other cards/computers and if the card works in other computers, I am out of ideas. Maybe someone else will chime in with another idea - my last one is to take your card(s), reader, and Mac and book an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar - advice is free there.

What is a Genius Bar?  I can look at the pictures from the XD card but I would like to save them on my imac. Do you know how I can do that. I thought this would be so easy put the card in and away you go.

Do I need to get iphoto?
