TS2972 Have to keep restarting iTunes for homeshare

I replaced my two Apple TV 2s with Apple TV3s, and now I have to keep restarting iTunes on my iMac to see my libary.

 

It was flawless before.  I very rarely had to restart iTunes.

 

I have an iMac (2011, i7), hardwired to an airport extreme, and then the two Apple TVs are hard wired as well.

 

I'd blame the ATV3s, but I also can't see the library on my iOS devices unless I restart iTunes on the iMac regularly.

    Hi Bdub12,  are you still having this problem?  Were you able to solve or find out what was causing the issue?  I have nearly the exact same situation and setup and am getting very frustrated restarting itunes once or twice a day.

    I am right there with you.  I have to restart once or twice a day on each computer so iTunes will share with each apple tv, iOS device, or airport express. It's just a matter of closing then relaunching iTunes, but it is so annoying. I hope there is a fix soon. It started after the last iTunes update.

    Hi New Jersey Jason,

     

    I am still having the same problem.  I suspect it has something to do with the fact that my iTunes library is not on one of the internal hard disks but a larger external drive.  Out of interest is your Library running on an external or nextworked drive as well by any chance?

    Yes!  It is. It's on a 6TB thunderbolt drive. I have been wondering about that too. But it happens to my wife as well and hers is on the main boot drive.

    have this problem also and it started after updating Apple TV (3rd Generation). My Apple TV (1st Generation) works fine. I have 3 (3rd Generations) that do now work now. I have to constantly restart iTunes which in effect restarts iTunes Home Sharing. There is nothing you can do about this, Apple has to fix this problem. If you review the release notes from 5.0.1 everything they mentioned having made better is now not working properly. Poor QA.

    Same issue here :-/

     

    One Apple TV2, one Apple TV3.  Both hard wired into AEBS which in turn is hard wired to a Mac Mini running iTunes.  The library itself is on a HDD attached to the AEBS via USB.  Also two airport express units.

     

    Once/twice a day the remote app on my iPad/iPhone loses sight of iTunes, as do the Apple TVs.  Quick restart of iTunes and we're back in business.  iTunes on the Mac is fully functional in these periods of downtime so it's not like it cannot talk to the hard drive where the library is or anything.  It is EXTREMELY annoying and got worse recently so some update has done something bad.  Everything is running latest versions of software/firmware.

     

    I set something up on my iPhone/iPad so I can restart iTunes remotely which helps A LOT but it's still far from ideal and not very 'Apple'.

    I am still having this issue after the most recent iTunes update which I hoped would fix.  Out of interest how did you go about setting up the remote reboot of itunes from you iPhone/iPad?

    Hi Chris,

     

    I used an app called 'Telekenesis'.  It runs a little web server type app on your OSX machine and you access a website via Safari that can run shell scripts.

     

    I was thinking about doing a little guide later today so I'll post a link when I get around to it - I feel it might be useful for a lot of people.

    HI Adam,

    That would be great. I took a look at the site for telekinesis and it looks usefull. My kids use the Apple TV so this is driving them....and me nuts. Also the last iTunes update didn't fix this so it points to the 5.0.1 Apple TV update which addressed home sharing "imporvements".

    It isn't the apple tv because it effects the remote app and home sharing from the music app on the iPhone and iPod touch. It's ALL connections to the iTunes library that are effected.

    I am pretty sure this issue is with the new iTunes upgrade (10.6.3).  My reasoning is that I am losing connections with not only ATV 2 and ATV3, but also my (3) 1st generation ones.  They are experncing the same issues (cant fine library) and there hasnt been a software update for them in over a year or more?  My 5 atv system has been bullet proof for a few years now and now all of a sudden I have to restart iTunes multiple times per day...has to be a iTunes issue...
