Q: Apple TV 2 has big problems homesharing - fixes?  firmware update needed!

After 5 days of having ATV2, (which is lovely when its working) I'm still having problems narrowed down to Homeshare access from ATV2 to my macbook running the latest itunes.

I've just moved house and got a new broadband router and provider the same day as the ATV2, so it has taken a while to make sure it was not the router (BT home Hub 2), the connection, or my macbook itself.

Macbook - (Running Snow Leopard) Internet working fine with router and broadband, (have removed all network settings, removed passwords in keychain and repaired permissions, restarted and re-entered network info - just incase).

Router - works fine all day, with macbook and dell laptop, Have tried restarting a lot just incase

Apple TV 2 - works fine with broadband and router, and I can browse the online selection of videos, youtube etc fine.

Homeshare - When I connect ATV2 using homeshare to my macbooks itunes account, it works for a maximum of 2 minutes then loses connection. And my macbook which still shows full wifi signal can no longer get the internet, and forgets the wifi password and says its wrong when I re-enter it. Only fix is to restart router and delete network settings on macbook and re-enter them.

So is this homeshare technology screwing up, Apple TV 2 screwing up, or my router jumping in after a couple of minutes and saying NO!.

Is anyone else experiencing exactly the same as me?

Its a shame that the only thing I've found left to try (after searching alot of forums) is when turning on 'Homeshare in Itunes' don't press the 'DONE' button. Will give that a try tonight.

I have wifi and my AppleTV happens to be close enough to the Apple router to throw an ethernet cable at it, which one would think would be best and fastest connection.  All my issues went away the second I switched to wifi.

The update (at least all the notes say) addresses -   Parental Controls: Addresses an issue which caused content restrictions to be incorrectly applied for the iTunes Store in Australia.

So I have been doing to some more experimenting.    Here is what I have done so far:

    1) Took a spare Macbook Pro and did a clean install of Lion with iTunes.    Disconnects from iPad, iPhones and AppleTVs still occur.

    2)  Tried both Wired and Wireless.   No difference.   Still have disconnects.

    3)  In order to elimate network issues, I borrowed a spare Cisco 3750E switch ($20,000 networking switch.   Disconnect problems still occur.

    4) Updated Apple TVs to 5.0.2.   Still disconnects.

    5) Completely turned off IPv6.   Still disconnects.

The only variable which I haven't been able to change is iTunes.    So I am highly suspect that this is an iTunes bug.    It isn't reassuriung based on the amount of traffic that Apple simple doesn't say "acknowledged...working on a fix"    Obviosuly Home Sharing is very broken...hopefully Apple isn't becoming like Microsoft with crappy code which never works.

The thing is, I am still using the same version of iTunes that I was using before that last big ATV update. That version of iTunes worked perfectly fine with my ATVs before that. After the ATV update Homesharing stopped working properly with my ATV. So since I've changed nothing with my iTunes, and the problems started immediately after installing that ATV update, I can only conclude it is a bug in the ATV software.

It could be multiple bugs and the interaction of the ATV with iTunes.   Personally I have removed all of the ATVs from the network this morning.   Rebooted the iTunes machine everthing works fine initially.  Then after about 2-3 hours I can't connect using the iPad or iPhone video app.

Eitherway the common denominator with all of this is the Homesharing feature.   That is broken.

I had the ATV2 since they launched it, after the big updated, It just doesn't talk to itunes, since it doesn't talk to itunes, the remote app on my iphone and ipad is useless... I've spent days trying workarounds mentioned here, but nothing...

one day out of nothing, about 1 week ago, it worked out of nothing...

I hadn't had a chance to watch it anymore and it was there... today I got the new ATV3 - made the the setup, and couldn't get it to work again, neither my ATV2

This is false advertising, they're selling a thing that doesn't work, one of the main reasons I bought the new ATV3 is to listen to music on my family room on my home theather, and it doesn't work... can we do a class action sue?

Class action is really not necessary.  This is a Uniform Commercial Code issue as we have all purchased an item that is purported to do "x" and we all have "receipts" so we can just return the item for a full refund.  If that happened enmass, it would get Apple's attention.

I get my revenge by telling people not to buy ATV. I have stopped 3 so far by telling them it doesnt work

The staff in the iShop dont like it but what can they do, its true ;-  ATV is rubbish and Apple are making no effort to rectify the problem

I have had 2 apple TV's for 2 years now. Eventually I have managed to solve all the problems. Its easy and just needs an amendment to the instructions.

    Simply.

    Switch off apple TV module

    Turn off computer

    Reboot router

    Reboot computer

    Plug apple TV in

Just lke magic home sharing works.

Ok not the easiest way but if Apple could help (and it appears not) perhaps there could be an easier way.

No offence, Mr Mess, but rebooting everything every time it stops working is not an answer! This only goes to prove there is a problem with the software, either in the ATV or iTunes, that can only be solved by pulling the plug each time. Apple need to fix this!

I thought in my case it was itunes 10.6.3 but no longer think so.  Clearly other shave had the proble longer so there may be more than one issue.

I updated both AppleTVs around the same time, was away on holiday for 10 days and since I came back and updated itunes to 10.6.3 I noticed problems with AppleTV constantly losing connection to itunes after changing to a different AV input and back.  I had taken a MAc Mini away with me running 10.6.1.  Now that I have added that back to the home network, I see the same loss of connection with that iTunes too, so must assume it's the latest AppleTV update that's caused issues.

Clearly an issue Apple is ignoring. This is not the first time they haven't responed to a large community experiencing the same problem.

    Apple-

Get your sh1t together and at least recognize publicly that this is a large scale issue!

Does anyone know where one can download a previous (OS X version) of iTunes so that we can down rev to see exactly where the problem was introduced?

Well......we know the problem was first introduced with that last major update for the Apple TV....the same day iPad 3 was released and the new version of IOS was released.

You can find older versions of iTunes on the Apple website if you dig for them. BUT....as I've said before, I'm still using and older version of iTunes and have the Homesharing issue like everyone else.....so I doubt that will help you any. My older version was working fine with Homesharing until that Apple TV update.

This is not just an apple tv issue. It also drops when using the remote app and itunes. Something is up with home sharing. Restarting HS is not a fix I can live with.

Anyway...my apple tvs are going on craigslist and I am getting a sonos system for playing music. I'm not a big S Jobs fan but at least he listened to his customers. Apple is the new Sony.
