I hope that Apple plans on making a 17" MBP with the new features, including the screen and thinner and lighter like the other sizes. Otherwise that will just suck!

15.4" is nice, but 17" screen is just that much better. With the higher resolution, it would be awesome.

    Gone.

Less than 2% of MacBook Pro sales in the preceding quarter.

    Too bad. Definitely a bummer!

I feel the same way. I have a 17" and I could not stand replacing it with a 15".

Hope fully Apple will not treat it as their doing the Mac Pro.

So what? It was a sector of the market that they should appreciate is leading the field, the real on the road creative types, filmakers and photgraphers. Ditching this model is a big mistake. Apple needs to cater for all the users, as they do not license their software out to other designers/manufacturers. They should be giving us MORE options and not less. Now we are stuck with a range based on what most people want, and screw the rest of you. Well, I think that's a load of cobblers and Apple deserve a kick in the scrotum for their lack of respect to the sector who have shelled out tones of cash on their kit for years!

       BRING BACK THE 17" !!!!

I guess only a few of us who wanted to have the extra real estate. I think retina at the super high res will be hard to see text. I think most people will have to drop back to HD to see text, even if it is crisp. The 27" screens have the super his res and that text is hard to read, though it's not retina display tech.

    Thanks.

I guess I better run out and pick up another 17" unit and store it away for a while, so when this one dies, I'll ahve a brand new one!  I wonder it SJ was going to kill it and the Mac Pro too? I have my doubt's **** at the prices they are asking for the 15s, they could have asked a bit more for the 17"s and probably been just fine.

Not sure if a revolt from the 2%ers would change anything though.

BRING BACK THE 17" INCH !

All sorts of people in the visual and audio bussiness are using it.

Respect those who have supported Apple for a long time, against all odds.

I have had MBP or PB 17 inch units for the past 10 years. I am not happy or amused by Apple's attitude. The machine was worth its' money, but being forced into a junior computer annoys me to no end.

I guess with Apple turning over their product line, maybe they thought they could turn over the customer base and dump us older customers for someone new who will buy a mac mini, and maybe an iPad.

The folks looking for an upgraded mac pro tower also feel abused too. I guess there Apple is moving in different directions.

Apple either needs to can the secrecy or face losing more loyal customers. I seriously doubt cost had anything to do with rolling out a new 17 inch laptop. They did not have to offer the retina display to sell a beefed up unit. They could have offered Flash and a HDD. They could have pulled the express card slot in favor of an SDHC card.

The death of the 17inch form factor is not a good thing. I mean who cares about having high resolution if in order to read the text you need a magnifying glass because the screen is so much smaller. This will have such a crippling effect on me that not only will I have to look to a PC solution I also have to give up my my Apple Pro Apps like 'Final Cut Studio'.

The 17inch was the perfect pro level note book for running edit software and taking on location for downloading footage directly into the system via the express card slot. It was big enough to work off without the need to carry around an additional screen.

The 15 inch is just not useable without carrying a plethora of external accessories and even then working your with a smaller screen so not as much real estate. If I want to adjust the screen settings so I do have the same amount of real estate i can add the magnifying glass to the kit. Also no audio jack in. I guess you could take audio in via USB but only 2 ports by god what a laugh and what the **** is with no ethernet port Bwahahaha. surly they could have fit one of those in. I mean at present it's the fastest most stable means of connecting and now we're asked to buy a peripheral to make it happen. what a joke.

It's a real shame and i am extremely saddened by this move. In some small way i am still praying that a 17 inch will be released later down the line because i've been using the MBP since it was released and updated it every 2 years but I won't be buying a 15" as it just doesn't suit my needs. Also no update to the Mac Pro's in years and the fact that I will have to give up Apple Pro apps for AVID  as a result of this means I will be retiring most of my Apple machines. I guess Apple just no longer has an interest in the pro market so as far as i'm concerned, "so long Apple it's been nice knowing you"

Has anybody seen a DAW (like logic pro) on the 15" retina yet? Given the hardware changes (lack of audio interfaces and firewire) I'm a bit disheartened and somewhat hopeful they haven't given up on the 17 altogether...especially for the music community.

That that said I'd hate to see the processing power get used to power a 17" retina display when what I'm really after is the ivy-bridge / SSD / 16GB ram upgrade over my core2-duo.

It'll be interesting to see how / if they will continue address the pro-audio community segment.

I really do prefer the 17" for my hand size. It's perfect for me. I've happily lugged previous generations of my older 17"'s all over the world without a second thought and the slightest regret.

I hope that wasn't a brilliant maneuver on your part...but I fear it probably was.

I agree, the 17" was the perfect power user size. I like large screens, and people like us are dedicated and reliable customers from whom apple earns very large profit margins. I really am disappointed by Apple's move. I might as well get a cheaper macbook pro now that I'll be forced to buy an external monitor (non-apple)  to go with it.
