Q: Browser Hijack/Redirect Yahoo YQL Console

Good day,

I have been encountering a browser redirect to developer.yahoo.com/yql/console (the http:// is not included as to not create a link) almost every time I attempt to access www.google.com either on the Safari or Firefox web browser.

I had believed that this might have been a DSN trouble spot thus flushed out the cache through:

Utilities > Terminal by using the command "dscacheutil -flushcache"

This worked immediately after, briefly giving me access to www.google.com, but a subsequent attempt (after closing and reopening the browser) proved that the flush did not correct the problem.  Researching the browser hijacking/redirect to the Yahoo YQL website I have been finding many virus/malware websites promoting their products by stating that this problem is indeed caused by a virus/malware.

http://blog.teesupport.com/how-to-remove-httpdeveloper-yahoo-comyqlconsole-redir ect-yql-console-virus-manual-removal

I do not know if this redirect is being caused by a miscommunication with the servers or possibly by malware, therefore I am respectfully requesting any advice that may resolve the matter.

I am currently running: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)

Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response.

Cheers,

AJ

    Hi...

OpenDNS not only prevents browser re directs, it adds security, includes anti phishing filters and it's free.

Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.

    Click +

Enter these addresses exactly as you see them here.

    208.67.222.222

    Click +

    208.67.220.220

    Then click OK.

Topic : Manually provided DNS server addresses are higher priority than DHCP's

Apple suggests using OpenDNS here >  Safari 5.0.1 or later: Slow or partial webpage loading, or webpage cannot be found

    Hi ajg437,

Can you please follow up with this thread and let us know if this issue was resolved?  I too am getting this same error on my new Macbook Pro Retina, and I'm pretty upset about it.  Before I start downloading a bunch of removal tools though, I'd like to know if there's a simpler, more affective way to remove this redirect virus.

So let me know if what Carolyn (above) recommended actually worked for you.

    Thanks.

    Dennis,

In System Preferences / Network, I clicked Advanced, then the DNS tab.  I deleted the DNS addresses present using the 'minus' button, they were my router's addresses, then added, using the 'plus' button, Google's DNS addresses: 8.8.8.8, then 8.8.4.4.

Doing this I have not had any redirects and pages load much faster.  I scanned the computer using ClamX and the results were negative for any malware.  Yet, as most Mac users feel that the OS is not prone to malware I still question then how the redirects were initiated.

Please note that simply changing the DNS addresses does not mean that the computer has not encountered any malware.  I am still cautious about signing onto important websites (such as banking) as most browser hijacking malware also may have key logging and backdoor capabilities.

    Cheers,

    AJ

These workarounds are OK, but they don't address the root issue, which is on your Mac that is causing these redirects?  I doubt that it's the DNSChanger Trojan as the redirect portion of this has been disabled by the FBI, but you'll know on Monday if you can't reach the internet any more. If you have not already done so go to http://www.dcwg.org/detect/checking-osx-for-infections/ and use an appropriate site to check.

We've just started to see what appear to be a new infection of the /etc/hosts file but those are redirecting google searches to adult video sites.  Open this file with a text editor to see if you are infected.

Otherwise, please describe exactly what actions you take and the results.

Try updating your routers firmware. Worked for me. Hope this helps.

Been having same problems.  Found it.  I had a VERY WEIRD PROBLEM.  This Yahoo/yql console redirect once in a while when i went to google.com.  however,  every other web address works.  even google.ca.  anyway.. I am gone a lot, with my laptop that uses a wifi signal (windows machine), my ipad, my iphone.  My wife has a wifi ipad at home.  Bought her a iphone5 for Christmas.  SO - the clash happened and I didnt' even think about it.  This is a common problem and there is no solution on the web, other than a virus a virus a registery hack blah blah... the ONLY THING my situation has in common is the router.  A linksys something, midrange money router. oK> so i tweeked and reset and (insert 5 hours of troubleshooting here).  very frustrating, one machine would work for a minute, then a few later another would work an the first one wouldn't.  Just do this... count your wifi divices (me - = 2 iphones, 1 laptop, 2 ipads).  If the wifi is authenticated on the network all at the same time.. that is your problem.  You need a bigger router.  go turn off 2 devices and the other 3 will work.  Turn them off and give your router time to reauthenticate everyeone, turn on the 2 that were off and they will work just fine.  Simple.  good luck.  Wish someone would have explained this to me yesterday...

I experienced the same issue and have Comcast as my ISP and have a LInksys WRT160Nv3 router.  The on-line 'live' Comcast help was useless, and did little more than reboot the cable modem.  I agree with Driver777 that this is NOT a virus.  The problem resurfaced this evening and I had the issue on an iMac, Windows Laptop, iPhone, iPad and a MacBook Pro.  I'm pretty certain that I would not have a virus on ALL these devices that would kick in with the symptoms ALL at the same time.   Driver777 may be on to something with respect to the multiple devices and wifi authentification.  Either way, I did upgrade the router firmware and if it kicks in again, I'll follow Driver777 troubleshooting process.

Bottom line, I don't think this is a virus and we also observed that the issue has never cropped up with these same devices off our home network.  Much of the 'virus talk' I found when searching was posted by companies that wanted to sell you virus removal services.  I couldn't find a reliable description of any qualified virus.  If anyone can verify that this is a known virus, please post a link!. . . I can't explain the recurring routing to the same Yahoo pages but maybe there's some default DNS resolution built into the router or something.  I don't have the energy to explore that further unless this problem comes up again.

I don't think this will be of much help to you, but apparently a lot of people have been seeing this issue for the last three years without satisfactory resolution WRT160N V3 has serioius DNS issues.

Assume you are using the default Comcast DNS. Have you tried an alternative (e.g. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS)?

Thank you for pointing me to that.  As I was updating the firmware today, I was thinking about changing to OpenDNS or Google.  I am indeed using the default Comcast DNS and I'm going to change that.  Sheesh, it looks like these known issues have been around for at least three years.  I should have read up on these in a little more detail before I purchased that router!

HIya, ok here's the deal.  I'm wrong.  Started it on me again, and # of connections really shouldn't matter.  In every case so far, this has been a linksys router AND a Comcast connection.  I had one of my guru buddies VPN me through his server (basically using his server to direct traffic, not my router).  Guess what, all problems fixed immediately.  24 hours, worked flawless.  Yanked out the router and set up a new router, no problems, no hijacks, no viruses, no malware.  Yes, I did previously try all suggested solutions, flushed DNS etc, but these fixes were only temporary.  Problem is he router.  Cuica was right, serious DNS problems w the previous router and Comcast combo.

MMadman, good ?.  I can answer that, yes.  I had some trouble it seems some months ago and I set my primaries to google, 8.8.8.8 and google 8.8.4.4.  Seemed to be better for a bit, but that won't be a perminant fix.  You were right.  It's the router.

I just spent 36 hours dealing with the issue of a Linksys router paired with a Comcast modem.  My Explorer browser on my PC and Safari browser on all my Apple products were taken over by the Yahoo Developer Site.  I didn't see this thread until my tech guru sent it to me.  No one at Comcast knew about this problem or how to fix it.  Of course, calling Yahoo is impossible.  Since I read this thread and still didn't understand what you were talking about, I bought a Belkin router and installed it.  That seems to have resolved the problem.  No one at Comcast knew about this issue or how to fix it.

This seems to have fixed my problem. Thank you so much!  I was hating that Yahoo was hijacking my browser, no matter how many times I reset my home page.  But this seems to have alleviated the issue, so thanks for sharing. (Especially aggrivating to hear today that Yahoo just passed Google in homepage hits knowing that so many people were struggling with this issue - maybe it was just a way to boost their numbers so they look better to investors.)

Great, but again, that is a work-around. There is still something on your hard drive that caused this in the first place.
