Hello,

I have upgraded iPhoto yesterday. Since the 9.3 version is installed, I have trouble when I launch the app. In fact, each time, I have an alert which tells me that iPhoto couldn't find a pic.

I have tried to start the app with alt+cmd and tried all the maintenance options, but no changes.

Does anyone else have the same problem ? Is there a solution ?

Here is a pic of the problem I got (it's in French).

Thank you very much for your help.

Well, I made it past the install. But now iPhoto is freezing everytime I start it, while updating the library :-(

I also past the download and install process fine, but when reopen my iphoto the 9 step library organize process seems endless and never concludes so I had to stop this process 3-4 times since its endless and then it seems to freeze on step 5.  Anyone on Apple Iphoto Dept has a solution for this problem ?  The new Iphoto has a BUG while installing the previous library from my files of photos !!

    Option 1

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.

    If that fails:

    Option 2

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

    Regards

The same thing happens to me, my iphoto says its updating and at step 5 of 9 says it is 99% complete--but it never finishes.  I left it overnight updating at 99% complete at step 5 of 9 and nothing had changed when I checked this morning.  There must be a bug in this update--its the first time anything like this has happened in my experience.

Also, regards Terance Devlin's reply--you seem to be posting the same advice on diffrent/multiple threads that are related to this issue, but I don't see how it relates or is helpful to this never ending updating process for the  iPhoto 9.3 update.

Yes, because these options are frequently successful with iPhoto issues - many of which are related to the database file. A number of people have reported that Option 1 has been successful for them with this issue in the last couple of days.

    Hi TD

None of you very good options work for me on my iphoto. I really dont understand how can Apple come up with such a BAD upgrade, now all my pictures I cant see them and dont know how to solve this problem caused by APPLE with their upgrade . I have my iphoto databse with over 65,000 pictures and cant access them. Can someone please help me and inform me to what phone number I can contact APPLE to solve the problem they have caused me ??  Your options 1 and 2 I have tried and keep getting this error or unable to access my pictures, this is a killer for me !!

    Regards, Joachim

PS: I triend both of these options here under mentioned and sincerely thanks for your help and attempt to help me.

    Option 1

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.

    Hi,

I am also in the same situation as yours. I switched from Windows to Mac hearing the stability and all that crap. But now I understood at least in Windows as the life revolves around files and folders and in case you have a back up you are sure you have not lost the file. In mac as they belive that Computers have to be smarter than people and applications/programs should be the front end and people should be kept away from folder structure, you are in big trouble the moment an upgrade or Application messes up, cos if you go and check the iphoto library, its like decoded and organised in the most cryptic manner that no one can understand or make out of where what is stored.

My iPhoto also is not opening and I am also at the same situation as yours !!!!.

    Regards,

    Muscatman

    Hi Friend,

I think finally I solved it. The steps are simple but I didnt take notes , but a solution do exist and all my files are now backed and inside this new version of Iphoto. I had to call Apple to Technical App Support and with their help on the phone in 10 minutes we figured my problems which could be yours as well. All I can say all my files are saved and back and I had more than 65000 pictures dated back to 1993 when I moved from Windows to Mac. I do insist even with this big problem MAC is much more stable than Window , I also have a Window Laptop and rarely use it do to its unstable and crashes all the time. This was the first serious problem I face on Apple for the past 10 years of peace and mind.  Call Apple to the APP Tech Support 800-676-2775  and ask for help Im sure they will perform. If needed I can pass you my case number so then can faster understand your problem and apply towards you the soluctions or steps you need to take on your MAC.  regards, Joachim

i run into the same problem. After sweating it a bit due to related posts i found on the web i followed Terence Devlin's advise above to rebuild the library.  It has fixed the problem. Thanks, Terence!

Finally solved (by opening lib with older iPhoto version)!

After trying Terence's trick rebuilding the library with iPhoto I was missing some pictures.

So I tried option 2 and used iPhoto Library Manager to fix the lib. Unfortunately the app uses iPhoto to repair (iPhoto opens in background), so iPhoto froze again in a loop, trying to update the library.

Then I took my girlfriends macbook, since she was still running the last version before 9.3 (9.2?). I used it to start a backup of my library. Her older version stated, that there were some inconsistencies, which needed to be fixed. It took a while, but the library was accessible with her iPhoto.

After that I copied the fixed library back to my Mac and was pleased to watch that iPhoto 9.3 had no problem to process & update the library.

Now I am running 9.3 with my lib and no pictures lost!

Thanks to everyone who gave advice and my girlfriend for being lazy with updating her mac

    Hi Friends,

Good News.  I can confirm Apple has a solution to solve the problem. I called Apple at the App Tech Dept just dial their 800 number and ask for the APP Tech Dept and explain to them the problem or issue with the 9.3 iPhoto upgrade using my case number 322519334 and from it they will be able in a faster matter to get you moving and solve the problem or bug on this upgrade. Its now proven that any one with iphone old version prior to the 9.3 upgrade will have problems if you have large database such as me with 65000 pictures or files. The best way to go is to save your files first ( backup mode ) them install the upgrade 9.3 and then import your files back to iphoto via import or add files. For more Help I really recommend before you ruin your database to call Apple at their App Dept specialist and surely they will solve this issue or bug.

The Idea and process posted by Wladi works as well, thanks for that post.  Regards, Joachim

Same problem as well endless beach ball after 1-1/2 days.  I too had a rather large library.  But I think that my problem is also due to forgeting to empty the trash which held a substantial number as well.  I'll try rebuilding with the prior version of iphoto on a diferent computer to see if this resolves the problem.

We shouldn't need work-arounds with a simple upgrade.

I am grateful for the advice you folks have provided.  Thanks, Lindsey

I am stuck and frustrated with the same problem, fearing what will happen to my several thousands of photos. Could anyone tell which steps Apple Tech support helped with?
