If you really want a 17" MBP, have you tried an Apple retail store to see if they have some in stock? It is hard to believe they have all been sold out already...but easy to believe there will be a run on them now. If you really want one you might want to check quickly.

Thanx for the quick supportive replies, guys.
The point is that I didn't mean what you've got.
I really hoped that Apple would release 17'-er with all the new features 11', 13', and 15'-ers have (no matter if it's MBP ot MBA)

I have similar feelings in that regard since I have two 17" MBPs. However this is what is available at the moment, but things may change in the future.

I would consider a 17" version of the 15" retina MBP. Though I would like an integral Optical Drive, I can survive without one since they have a slim one available for MBPs. The USB 3 connectors are a good step forward. I read that there are two microphones in the unit and software available so that one can do dictation and the MBP does the typing! WOW! I'm a two finger typist.
There are downsides, principally that there seems to be no more flexibility in adding RAM or storage by the user. Battery life has not increased, probably because the retina display requires more power which offsets the gains expected from the SSD drive. Naturally price is another factor to be considered.
The biggest question in my mind is the display it self. A couple of weeks ago I looked at two iPads side by side, one retina, the other non-retina. I could not tell the difference! Unless I can observe an definite improvement in the retina display over the standard one, it seems pointless to travel down that road.
In the mean time I will continue to use my excellent 2010 17" MBP without any envy.

what a stupid decision by Apple. the 15" screen is too small. i love the expanded 17" screen space. why would i buy a 15" when the 17 is just as portable and only a fraction heavier.
would Steve Jobs have allowed this?

Yes, I'm Agree... Its a Huge Mistake to Discontinue 17" !!! I use with AutoCad, and IS A MUST to have a big Screen !!! I
Please Apple, I dont care if there is not a Retina 17", but WE NEED A MacBook PRO WITH A BIG SCREEN !!!!

To be fair, suggesting that the 17-inch model has been discontinued without concrete evidence is speculation. Apple delisted the 17-inch model from their online store, but have made no formal announcement that they are abandoning that specific form factor.

This has got to be the biggest bone-headed move by Apple BY FAR. I can see this being the beginning of the end, so many decisions being made without Steve at the helm.... no more 17", smaller iPad, abandoning their Green program.... what has this company become in such a short time?
