are you sure you are connected on the same network of the device you are trying to airplay on ? if yes then maybe you should consider to do a restore

The network are same. The behavior is random. Sometime the airplay button comes up. After few hours it won't show.
- checked that both devices(apple tv & iPad/iPhone) are in the same network
- restarted both the devices
But to no avail.
Seems that I might have to replace the apple tv. It just does not work randomly.

I have also noticed the AirPlay button occasionally does not show up in many of my apps. It does always seem to be available in the audio controls of the multitasking bar. When it doesn't show up double click the Home button to reveal the multitasking bar and swipe to the right to reveal the audio controls where you should see an AirPlay button. Once you select an AirPlay device the icon should appear in the apps again.

I guess you are referring to the controls near orientation lock button. The behavior is kind of random. Today afternoon it was working perfectly. Now it does not work suddenly. I tried from Iphone, iPad and Mac book pro. It seems to be an issue with apple tv rather than iPad. Will be replacing it soon.

The AirPlay speaker (Apple TV) dropping from the network and the AirPlay icon disappearing on an iOS device could be 2 separate issues. If the AirPlay speaker drops off the network the icon will disappear from iOS. In my case, I have 5 Airplay devices, it is not AirPlay speakers dropping off my network rather than the icon not properly showing up in the media apps on my iPad. My AirPlay speakers are still on the network however the icon does not show up. I can always activate the speakers from the playback controls (by the orientation lock button) which is always there. Once an AirPlay speaker is activated the AirPlay button properly shows up beside the volume control in the media apps. I have seen this issue many time on my iPad, but have yet to see it with my iPhone.
Generally if you are having issues with the Apple TV dropping from your network I would look at your WiFi network. AirPlay and Apple TVs work best with a good strong, stable wireless network. I just tried setting up an AirPlay speaker for my sister's patio. It works OK in the house but their 802.11b router in the basement will not run a speaker beyond 3' of the back door even though you can browse the Internet perfectly fine. Only options for her was to move the router, I also suggested updating the router to a better quality 802.11n router or to use a bluetooth speaker which is the route she chose.

I am also on an iPad 2 and iPhone 4S and since upgrading to 5.1.1 no longer have the airplay option to the AppleTV2. It used to work fine before. Same network, no Wifi network issues (everything else works fine). AirPlay not available from multitasking bar.

Your network may be working perfectly fine but I would suspect the link between the AirPlay has been broken which can happen if there is a temporary glitch in the network. Start by restarting the router and/or Apple TV to refresh the software that makes AirPlay work. You may also have to turn WiFi off and back on in the iOS devices.

Exactly the same issue
iPhone 3GS 5.1.1
iPhone 4 5.1.1
iPad 2 5.1.1
from all my iDevices, no way to use Airplay to my ATV2...

I tell you, this 5.1.1 update is junk!
Lots of problems with it, not just AirPlay...
Apple needs to fix it ASAP!

You responded to an old thread about an old iOS. If you are not using an original iPad I suggest upgrading the iOS to iOS 6.0.1.

OOO now I see.
Do you now the right threat? it's that since the last ATV IOS update 5.1.1. that I ca'nt use airplay from my IOS devices to my ATV2

Just looking at this now. It looks like there is no audio working with AirPlay on the ATV with it's 5.1.1 update no matter what or where you are streaming from. Even when streaming video, the video streams but no audio.

It's working for me now. Not sure what happened but the issue was with my home theater receiver which turning it off then back on fixed it. I run all my devices through my receiver using it for an HDMI switcher then one HDMI cable to the TV.
It may have been a coincidence or the ATV update sent a bad audio signal that messed with some of the automatic audio switching in the receiver. All I was getting was a faint audio signal out of one of my rear speakers while trying to play anything on the ATV. I reset the ATV2 then restored it with no fix then when I cycled the power on the receiver everything works properly.
