Hello! Yesterday I've purchased my first MacBook air. This is the second crash it had in two days. The first one occured when I was watching a youtube video and the second one happened while closing Chrome (while watching a youtube video). Should I go back to the store or can I fix this myself? This is the error report it gave:

Since it's brand new, either take advantage of your 90 days of phone support or take it back to the store. In the US, Apple support can be reached at 800-275-2273 or global numbers.

This is probably a problem with the graphic driver.  I had two crashes in two days on a brand new macbook air 13", involving the same addresses.

    panic(cpu 3 caller 0xffffff80002c4794): Kernel trap at 0xffffff7f816617b1, type 14=page fault, registers:

They pushed a patch yesterday which apparently did not fix the problem or introduced another.

The reboot being quite fast with the SSD, I can live with a crash a day if they fix it within a week.

    Otherwise happy.

Uninstall Parallels and the Telestream product according to the developers' instructions, and run without both for a while. If there's no improvement, exchange the unit.

I have installed virtual box. I have not run it yet, but it may have installed something running in the background. Can it contribute to the problem?

I have closed the window with the crash dump. Where the corresponding file is stored?

I believe there's a software update that might address some issues.  It should be available on Software Update if it applies.  Here's a reference.

as I said before, I had applied the update before getting the crashes. Got another one in the meantine.

I just got my MBA today and got a kernel panic without doing anything. If it happens again, it should be better to return it.

  • 8. Re: second kernel panic in 24 hours on new mba

Exact same problem here. Went to the local Genius Bar today and the dude says it's a problem with the specific combination of Intel HD 4000 chip + flash + Chrome. He says Apple is already aware of the problem and that a patch should be on its way. In the mean time he suggests to either A) use another browser, or B) disable flash in Chrome and use another browser when flash is needed. I'm going to stick with option B.

Thank you. I am seeing the exact same problem; nice to know others are seeing these panics and they are on Apple's radar also. And thanks to the Genius (who hopefully wasn't making up the bit about the patch being on its way!).

My problem with this is that I don't want to install flash separately on my machine.  I use Chrome because it has flash built in.  I delibrately don't want flash to run in safari at all.  Are their any other browsers that incorporate flash in the same manner as Chrome?

Is a Chrome issue, please provide feedback to Google via Feedback form

  • 12. Re: second kernel panic in 24 hours on new mba

Chrome may be inducing the crash, but by definition if a user-space process can crash the system, there's something wrong in kernel space.  The update to correct this needs to come from Apple.  Sounds like they're working on it.  I've had two of these on my brand new MacBook Air 11".

I don't think this is a Chrome-specific issue, as I get exactly the same crash without having Chrome installed (2012 MacBook Air).  It tends to crash when I'm running Parallels about once a day.  It looks like something is wrong with the HD4000 driver.

  • 14. Re: second kernel panic in 24 hours on new mba
    jpsf Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

I'm getting the same panic from the HD4000 driver while using VMWare Fusion on a brand new 2012 MacBook Air 13 inch, so I agree it looks a problem with the HD4000.
