Q: How do I get the serial number from my shuffle if it's not working?

I got an ipod shuffle about 7 months ago.  It just stopped working. When plugged into the usb it gets super hot and itunes will not read it.  I've tried it on both my MBP and imac so it's definitely the shuffle.

It's under warranty but since it's not reading in itunes, I cannot retrieve the serial number that way.  I also cannot find the case it came in (not sure if the serial number would be included in that).

What to do? It's under warranty and I want it replaced.
