Jun 17, 2012 12:05 PM in response to craiglonieby baltwo,If you have Time Machine enabled, more than likely, local snapshots are what's taking up the space.

Jun 17, 2012 1:13 PM in response to craiglonieby baltwo,AFAIK, there should be an option in the TM prefPane that turns that off. I don't use TM, preferring bootable CCC clones. Also, see Pondini's TM FAQs, which might cover it.

Jun 17, 2012 4:14 PM in response to craiglonieby Pondini,See The Storage Display for details on Backups and Other.
Backups on your internal HD are Local Snapshots (separate from "Other"); don't worry about them, since they're deleted after a week or if your drive gets over 80% full. See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #30 for the gory details.
Backups on an external are your normal Time Machine backups; Time Machine will manage them automatically, too.
