Jun 28, 2012 12:25 AM in response to tdiesselby madmac88,More likely than not. The problem seems to have started to occur in the past week. I cannot remember when I updated iPhoto to 9.3, though.
This happens to pictures imported from my digital SLR as well as photos sync'd via Photo Stream.

Jun 28, 2012 12:35 AM in response to tdiesselby Terence Devlin,People have been reporting this for a while now, with no fix at this time.
Many folks find that rotating the image and then rotate it back will get them a thumbnail.
iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback and report it.

Jun 28, 2012 7:43 PM in response to Terence Devlinby madmac88,Thanks for the tip! I was able to get the thumbnail by - rotate the photo, go to the next photo (supposedly "saving" the change), then go back to the first photo and "revert to original."
I have already reported this via the function you described. Will do another one about how I got the thumbnails back.

Jul 15, 2012 10:00 AM in response to madmac88by kingping,Found a faster way to get this fix. See: http://www.philmug.ph/forum/f19/fix-iphoto-black-portrait-images-84679/
You can select multiple photos from the album/events view and rotate them *TWICE* and then Revert to Original and voila!
