OK... almost progress!
stuck in a loop...
"iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode.
You must restore this product before it can be used with iTunes."
and... the regular restore sequence.
in which time the Nano screen states, "Do Not Disconnect"
and then goes blank.
"iTunes needs to prepare your iPod for recovery.
please leave your iPod connected."
and then back to the start of the loop...

DEAD... iPod nano (6th gen) after Software update version 1.1 and failed
and, of course, my warranty period expired on June 12th, 2012.
Which was a few weeks ago. Call Apple Customer Relations (800) 767-2775, be nice & polite. A little honey will go a long way with them.

Apple Customer Service were GREAT... and very receptive.
They happily replaced the Nano without question... even with the warranty status.
The business-World could learn a LOT from Apple about customer service.
