You only have 14 days from the date you received or purchased the MBPro for a return, just so you are aware.
AFAIK, there's not way to increase the brightness controls beyond the maximum allowed by the Mac OS X.

try calibrating it by going to Display Preferences.

The 48 LEDs that illuminate the display can only do so much and the nature of the Retina causes it to let less light out than a display of lesser resolution. Get used to it or take it back for a regular Mac. Using a light colored background pattern or image may help a bit.
