My new macbook air came up with a message saying That i have (exact quote) "24 hrs to surrender the laptop. Or face criminal prosecution" now the street and address is lists are not exactly mine, the exact house it specifies is no. 33 whereas im 47 although the post code is the same. This message appears along whith a bleeping noise when the laptop is locked?.. Can someone please tell me whats going on? I though ti was suspicous that they used "hrs" instead of hours and the "or" is capitalised after a full stop? Thanks

Suggestion: Take to the nearest Apple Store to figure out what's going on.

From where did you buy it? From "some guy" or from an Authorised Reseller?

Just wondering cause (over here at least) there is a chance that when some random guy sells a practically brand new computer/phone/tablet it might be stolen.

No idea other vise. Best thing would be to call Apple Customer Service or visit the closest Apple Store.

It sounds like someone initiated the "find my mac" functionality of iCloud. The message followed by the beep would further support that. As Doelago said, where did you get it from? If you bought it from "some guy" what sort of information do you have about that person or any sort or receipt?

Ignore all of the weak attempts at humor.  If something initiated a "this is stolen" message, you need to get it managed immediately.

And since you did not say what was the source of the unit (individual through CraigsList, authorized retailer, Apple Store) we cannot intelligently comment on the reliability of the seller.

Indeed. So do what @steve359 said.

As has been said, sounds stolen and the owner initiated Find my Mac. The rough location is shown to the person and they tried to figure out your address from it so they could put it in the message they sent. Unfortunately, from a legal perspective you now have a reasonable expectation that the laptop was stolen so if you don't attempt to correct this and it is in fact stolen, you can be found guilty of receiving stolen property.  On the other hand, maybe it was not stolen and the original owner is playing a trick or trying to scam you into giving it back.  You have the laptop and I assume you can log into it. Maybe you can find out who owned it (and who sent the message) by looking around a bit.
