I would go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your Account>SMTP settings>Primary SMTP, and check everything there.
If you're not sure what the SMTP server should be, then I would contact your email provider.
If changing the SMTP settings doesn't work, then I would delete the account and try readding it.

Hi Thanks for that. I ended up with two sets of settings. If I use the IMAP for incoming I get 750 emails going back as far as Ive been with ntl. so I changed to the pop settings. that works ok but the ouitgoing doesnt. it keeps saying connection to smtp.ntlworld.com failed. The settings are all there but I dont know if they are right.

I would contact your email provider for the correct settings again. They would know whether this account is to be configured with IMAP or POP settings as well as the correct server settings to input on your iPhone.
If all else fails, like I said above, you can delete the accound and readd it from scratch to start from a clean slate.

I could receieve but not send and tried loads of resets/fixes and changes of settings. NOthing worked properly but fortunately these guys sorted it out and it works perfectly every time now. I recommend their service highly as I would never have been able to figure it out myself! Hope it helps. Cheers Charlie
