I have snowleopard and do not plan to upgrade to Lion.  I have moved my e-mail (me.com) to icloud.  Will my ichat work when MobileMe ends June 30?

    Hi,

You will either have to change to an AIM name, an Apple @Mac.com name  or update to at least Lion to be able to use your iCloud ID.

Creating an Apple @Mac.com name requires an email.

This cannot be one that is or is linked to an existing Apple ID.  (so not the iCloud ID)

The Password should be kept to 16 characters or less (AIM Server Limit)

AIM will allow any email listed to be reused for more than one account.

With iCloud IDs iChat (and Messages beta) connects to the me.com server as well as the AIM servers and this process allows the AIM servers to "See" the password.

iChat version before iChat 6 (Lion) do not do this login to me.com and so the iCloud Name will not work in earlier versions.

With an AIM name, @mac.com name and MobileMe issued @me.com names (until June 30th if active) you can log in  here at AIM Settings and change some other settings for your account that iChat cannot change.

Due to the dual login process fro iCloud names this will not work for iCloud issued @me.com names

There will be no problems with your Jabber based accounts

    Hi,

If you stay with Snow Leopard you will continue to use iChat and the new AIM name you seem to hint you will be getting.

For Lion  (OS 10.7.x) users there was an opportunity to get a Beta app called Messages Beta (the download has since been pulled)

Messages as a full app is know to be coming in Mountain Lion (10.8)

This is basically iChat on Steroids.

Not only can it do the iChat Buddy list chats and the Video or Audio Only chats but it can message to iPhones and iPads (iOS devices running iOS 5 at least) via the same iMessage system that the app called Messages on the iOS device use  (I know that sounds like too many "Messages")

If you updated to Lion now then you would use iChat 6.x.x (depending how far you did the OS updates that have come out since)

This can use the same Buddy Lists to Text chat to ANY Buddy that Logs in to AIM.

These are AIM Names, @mac.com names, @me.com name issued under MobileMe and the newer iCloud Issued @me.com names. (The last does depend on them using iChat 6.x.x as well)

As you stand now you would still be able to Video chat to anyone using iChat 2 through iChat 6 (and the Messages Beta as it will still run at this time) plus the Mountain Lion version of Messages (Likely to be called version 7 to match the older iChat numbering system and keep to the numbering system that they have started with - New OS = new iChat Version number).

To say this an other way.

Apple IDs ending in @mac.com and @me.com are also valid AIM Screen Names (Keep the passwords to 16 characters or less).

Broadly speaking you can chat (Text, Audio or Video) to any AIM Screen Name using iChat 2 through 6 plus the Messages Beta.

Technically you are also supposed to be able to Video chat with AIM on PC users but this can vary.
