Jun 21, 2012 3:32 PM in response to danielbrownby Grant Bennet-Alder,If it does that chopped-up thing in Safe Mode (hold down shift key at Startup and be prepared, after several minutes, to provide your login_id and password), take it back to the store for evaluation.

Jun 21, 2012 3:42 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby Jack Oak,i noticed that alot of the animations are not as smooth as it was on nonretina MBP. Scrolling, etc. More pronounced is the page flips for calendars. I guess trying to animate 2800x1800 is too much for the laptop. this looks like pretty bad. sometimes being ahead of the times can be a bad thing. this screen demands a much more powerful GPU....

Jun 21, 2012 3:45 PM in response to danielbrownby danielbrown,So, It's funny. I just ran a script that actually sets the computer to the FULL native resolution and not scaled. And now the animations are smooth. This is pretty weird, but my only guess is that it was a bit too much for the GPU to re-calculate the resolutions. Hmm...

Jun 21, 2012 3:58 PM in response to danielbrownby x130844,It looks like the hd4000 is simply not optimized.
The hd4000 should be able to handle the GUI very smoothly but it is not.
If you switch to the NVIDIA chip, things are smooth like it should.
I hope apple release a new optmized HD4000 driver as this is kind of ruining the experience.

Jun 21, 2012 4:03 PM in response to danielbrownby custom mini,Think you maybe right, having looked on the Nvidia site lots of people are having major problems with the 6xx range and even the 5xx range seems like Nvidia's driver is missing something ? I know these are PC based problems but the OSX driver is still based on the same driver.
Custom mini.
Ps. I forgot the Nvidia driver is Optimus based...............don't get me started on how bad Optimus does not work, have a look over at the Nvidia forum Optimus section.

Jun 21, 2012 4:09 PM in response to danielbrownby danielbrown,I know there is a way to switch between the NVIDIA and HD4000 chip, but I forgot the process, could one of you guys point me in the right direction?

Jun 21, 2012 4:10 PM in response to danielbrownby x130844,go to enery settings and disable automatic switching.
It will then ONLY use the nvidia.

Jun 21, 2012 4:43 PM in response to x130844by danielbrown,It still seems a bit choppy, and it gets REALLY hot.

Jun 21, 2012 4:47 PM in response to danielbrownby x130844,I'd seriously go back to an apple store and ask them an exchange for same model.
Or have them run tests.
And if you can't drive to an apple store, reinstall Lion. (you can reinstall without loosing your personal data)
Something is not right, it should be rock solid.
(granted, the hd4000 driver, i fully believe has issues, but here you disabled it, it should be super smooth).

Jun 21, 2012 4:52 PM in response to danielbrownby danielbrown,Okay, thanks. I hope they'll give me a replacement. I really like this computer (aside from the problem above).

Jun 21, 2012 4:55 PM in response to danielbrownby GTCA,I have not had any choppy video, but there did seem to be an ever-so-slight game-input-lag when playing pinball HD. I attributed it to the game not being optimized to the Retina display. Switching to the discrete chip seems to have fixed that.

Jun 21, 2012 4:55 PM in response to danielbrownby x130844,They completely will.
Remember, even if the computer was working 100% perfectly, you still have 14days after the day of purchase. to simply return it. get your money back, or get another one.
They completely will replace it, no questions asked, which is why Apple is doing pretty well with customer satisfaction. I never had a problem with them.
(PS: I don't work, or never worked for apple)

Jun 21, 2012 5:53 PM in response to danielbrownby olafwagner,Yes!!!
I get exactly the same issue. I don't get it consistently, but sometimes when the screensaver is on, and I touch the touchpad, the machine doesn't seem to 'repaint' the screen correctly and I get a garbled UI (very similar to the screenshot).
@OP: Did you take your machine back to the store? Were they able to diagnose anything?

Jun 21, 2012 5:55 PM in response to olafwagnerby danielbrown,I'm assuming @OP means 'Original Poster', and I guess that's me.
Anyways, I did not take it back to the store YET. I made an appointment for tomorrow.
