I got my retina MBP this week and have been waiting for my thunderbolt to DVI adapters to get here so I can hook them up to my external displays. In the meantime I am using an older HDMI to DVI cable I got from Best Buy a few years ago. This is the cable (http://www.amazon.com/Dynex-1080p-DV.../dp/B0013NDHNU)

Anyways...I've noticed every once in a while the monitor I am using will sometimes go blank for a second and then back. It doesn't happen very often, but I'm not sure if this has to do with the cable, monitor, or my rMBP.

I have two of the exact same HDMI to DVI cables and I've noticed it happen with both of them. It might happen once an hour and even though it may be only a second, it's enough for me to notice.

Do you think it's a problem with the rMBP or something else? Would love to hear your opinions.

Thanks!

That's quite odd. Does it act the same with other monitors / televisions? I've got a few HDMI - DVI and HDMI - Display port (the ugly large style), i'll test mine out and see if it's exhibiting a similar issue. Do you have an HDMI tv else where in the house you could try an HDMI - HDMI cable with? I'd imagine if it's graphics card related it'd reproduce the same issue.

I'll test mine out and post a response.

    - Cheers

I've not heard nor read of any problems such as you describe (and document). I would try another adapter. I have the mini-display (Thunderbolt) to HDMI adapter from monoprice - http://www.monoprice.com/. (Adapters here.)

It works well with my late 2011 MBP and I assume that it would work with the MBP-R as well.

Do you think an adapter might help? They're cheap... I'd give it a try, anyway.

    Hey OP,

I do have encountered the exact same problem on a rMBP linked via HDMI to DVI (Amazon Basic) cable. The 22" Eizo (1650x1050) display goes black for a second, or even shows snow. I also testes at least two cables and was able to reproduce the default on random occassions.

I had the same guess as your source, that HDMI does not entirely support PC-monitors but couldn't confirm it. After all I still don't know if this is tolerable, or happening due to hardware-defects.
