note: called Apple Support and while the man who answered the phone was VERY nice, he would only barely acknowledge the existence of data files on the iPod, and would definitely not help me navigate how to use them to fix my problem. so it's really up to y'all.
help me, Apple Support Communities -- you're my only hope.

Use Disk Utility-FirstAid-Repair to recover ot correct a corrupted file system that is showing zero music.
It might not work, then you probably need to do Disk Utility-> Erase to reformat the Hardisk (losing all the msuic in the IPod)
If the above doesn't work, Do the iPod Disk Diagnostics as posted by tt2., it would fix yoiur problem by help in troubleshooting. Especially in confirming that the Hardisk is not worth repairing.
I would also suggest disconnecting all other USB devices and never use the USB port on the keyboard, when you are connecting the iPod Classic to the Mac or else there will be a recurrence of this problem.

Thanks, Bilbo. I think my bigger question at this point is how to reload all the data files -- the F## folders inside the iPod_Control folder, which contain song files with four-letter titles -- back onto an iPod, whether it's this one (if I'm able to fix the disk) or a new one. My iTunes will not recognize those song files as music, for whatever reason.
In other words, I have figured out how to get my data off... but how do I put it back on?

Use 3rd Party software, refer to this earlier post.

Hi Bilbo -- see above. I have tried several of those programs, and none will recognize my iPod as such.
Again, what I am looking for now is not how to get music OFF the pod, but rather how to load the iPod_Control folder four-letter music files back ON. If someone out there has done this successfully, hope to hear from you! As I noted above, my iTunes will not recognize or input the four-letter files, as I've seen suggested elsewhere. Thank you!
