Q: How can I reset the Mac App Store?

Hello!

For some time now, I did not get any update in Mac App Store meaning that there was nothing when klicking on "Updates". Yesterday, I finally looked under "Purchases" (or how is it calles in the English version?) and saw that there were a couple of updates. So, I updated all of them. When returning to the purchases, they were still marked as Applications to update. After repairing the rights in Disk Utility, I got a new update this morning using the "Update" Button again. But all other programs do still have the update button as described even as they are updated already. The version of those I checked was the new one.

What I did already:

- I deleted 2 Apps in finder and installed them again - afterwards, again the Update-Button

- I deleted cache and resetted everything in iTunes

- I activated the debug menu and deleted the cache and resetted

- I deleted files in ~/Library as described in https://discussions.apple.com/thread...art=0&tstart=0

It seems as if the MAS saves somewhere again which programs are installed in what versions. Probably it couldn't modify that file and is still showing the wrong details. Where can I reset that file? It's just not good if you don't know which App is updated and which one isn't.

    Hi..

If you have updates available there will be a red badge where you see Updates in the menu top of the App Store window.

I finally looked under "Purchases" (or how is it calles in the English version?) and saw that there were a couple of updates

Updates are not available from the Purchases tab.

    - I deleted 2 Apps in finder

Just dragging the apps to the Trash does not delete all the associated files.

Download and install this free utility to uninstall apps > Download AppCleaner for Mac - Uninstall your apps easily. MacUpdate.com

Now when you re download an app, the latest version will be installed.

Disk Utilty / Permissions has nothing to do with your updates from the App Store.

    Sorry, that's not it:

If you have updates available there will be a red badge where you see Updates in the menu top of the App Store window.

That's what I did not have for a few weeks. That was the start...

I finally looked under "Purchases" (or how is it calles in the English version?) and saw that there were a couple of updates

Updates are not available from the Purchases tab.

Maybe I did not call that correctly, but updates are shown in Parchases tab as well:

    Bildschirmfoto 2012-06-26 um 13.52.26.jpg

    Bildschirmfoto 2012-06-26 um 13.52.48.jpg

Usually, the "Aktualisieren" Button is shown only, if there is an Update in Update tab as well. But that's exactly the thing that does not fit any more for a couple of Apps.

Just dragging the apps to the Trash does not delete all the associated files.

Download and install this free utility to uninstall apps > Download AppCleaner for Mac - Uninstall your apps easily. MacUpdate.com

I know that and I have AppCleander installed. But that's not the point since I do want to have a correct view inside the App Store. Instead of the red circles, there should the the word "installed".

Now when you re download an app, the latest version will be installed.

Disk Utilty / Permissions has nothing to do with your updates from the App Store.

Correct for the Application itself but all the data used by the App Store needs to be saved somewhere - that's what I'm talking about.

I hope I could make this a bit clearer now!

    Thanks for your quick answer!

I just checked the behaviour of the MAS from another Mac Account and I got the same problems. So, it's probably nothing in ~/Library. In /Library, I could not find anything, but I would not change anything there anyway...

    chimpo ,

I was having similar problems with MAS and another thing that was happening was that when I signed into the MAS the MAS would show that I was signe in but in the drop down from the tool bar it did not recogonize that I was signed in , did all of the procedures outlined above , one thing I checked was making another user account on the same computer and then signing into the MAS , that worked and I was able to get all updates however the issue with signing in still existed on my original user account , several days went by and I had reloaded the MAS from a TM backup and it still did not work , I opened finder/applications/MAS and right clicked to get the drop down once the drop down appeared I clicked get info , when the info box opened I saw that the 32 bit mode was checked so I unchecked it and re started the MAS in my original user account and logged in and everything seemed to be working properly at this point so I tried an update and it worked so then I proceeded to check the drop down and it showed me signed in , shut the MAS down and reopened and logged in and it has been working fine ever since, have my fingers crossed just incase though...LOL.

Not sure if this will help you or not but it might be worth a shot........

    In short: did not help

It was a greag idea, but my MAS wasn't in 32 bit. I checked the box and saw that the updates wouldn't even work any more. Back in 64 bit, everything as before.

    Thanks anyway!

Have you tried to create a new user account on the same Mac Pro and sign into the MAS ? If not try that and see what happens , you might also want to make sure that you are not logged into any other of your apple accounts on any other devices or computers while accessing the MAS as this will sometimes keep the MAS from working properly.

Also you said you downloaded a combo pack , which combo pack did you download?

This may not help and I know that deleting the MAS App is difficult to do but try to delete the MASS and all associated files and then  restart the computer , once you have restarted download and install the 10.7.4 client combo pack(unless you are using the server edition if so download that one) and reinstall , shut down and restart again , once restarted you should see that the MAS has been reinstalled , open the MAS and sign in , it should be working properly.

To delete the MAS I used the app "TRASH ME" it may take a couple of times running this but it will delete the MAS , launch the app then drag the MAS from the finder to trash me and follow prompts , you may get one that says quick delete / stubborn or difficult , I used quick first and it did not work so I then used difficult and it worked.

Let me know what happens if you decide to try this and I hope you can get this issue resolved......

Also check for any AntiVirus programs that you may have installed to see if that may be causing any problems.

For the moment - I thought it's only possible to (over) install only the latest combo. That's why I did not say anything. It was the mentioned 10.7.4 client combo.

In a brand new account without Anti Virus Program, the same thing happened again. Do you know which files are associated with the MAS? Then, I could delete everything in Terminal. TrashMe may be nice but as the updates are shown again in the updates tab for new updates, the problem is not big enough to buy just for that an application for more than 5 Euro.

Would you agree that it has to be either a file in /Library? It cannot be a problem on the Apple Server, can it? It's checked locally, I suppose...

    Hello Carolyn,

I've followed your advice for so long as to be a believer!    But there is an emphatic recommendation to also use MacKeeper in the link you recommended and that leaves me a touch concerned.   Would it be wiser to download Appcleaner from some other source?

That was just the advertisement made by macupdate. So not Carolyn's fault

macupdate usually is a serious website to download applications from. But of course, you can go to the application's website: http://freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/
