Is this fix still working?  If it is, could you give more details of the steps you took?  Thanks!!

Yes, clearing the cashe and history very regularly, seems to have a positive effect on the slow down of typing, crash or apps turning off for no reason.   Also keeping apps completely turned off in the background helps as well.  I don't know what more to tell you.  I'm not even sure these changes are a placebo effect on me.  No I'm more than sure as I am typing this the keys are keeping up with me type quickly were they would not before I started this process.  This is NOT a fix there is still some a lil lag in the typing and things do turn off on their own periodically.  I would love to get rid of my iPad to someone on Craig's list et al but I it maybe criminal to give someone else my problems and get another iPad but I am affraid of the same thing happening again.

All of you should take a nice look at the link below, Amazon offers pretty good trade in values for even the first generation iPad.

    Sorry I don't see a link "below"??
Although seeing the news, reviews and photos of Microsoft's upcoming tablet called "Surface" I think I know what my next tablet will be...  Looks like the ipad really has a new contender and this one is for real, whats really cool is it has a built in stand, the cover is actually a keyboard and it even has Flash...  But more importantaly is the ports it will have a USB 2.0, Micro HD Video and a microSD,!!   Very cool..

It took me quite some time to post this considering how bad my iPad has become sine the upgrade. I am extremely frustrated with this. If they don't fix this soon I probably won't be buying future iPads. We also have a Samsung Galaxt tablet and I like it better. Hopefully they get it together soon.

What exact version are you running?

Just the same here on iPad1 with iOS 5. I bought the device less than two years ago, and it works unacceptably slow after updating to this version. If this is the way Apple wants to go, I won't buy an iPad again, even when I loved (in the past, not now) the user experience with my iPad 1, now I try to avoid it. I'm not ready to spend hundreds of bugs every two years just to keep an acceptable user experience. Speed is not the only thing when it comes to user experience but is one of the most important ones.

    Wow

Could you please explain what you mean by "DFU mode without backup"    Did you end up with iOS 5 are are you back to iOS 4?   Did all your "stuff" on the iPad remain there?

I would really appreciate any help you can offer

Thanks for the reply. How long ago did you do this fix?  I've tried some fixes that seemed to work great for a few days, then things got slow with crashes again.

Please forgive me, but I want to make sure I understand what to do next.

When you chose "new iPad" you ended up with a new, clean iPad with just the Apple apps, and had to reinstall all your other added apps, correct?

What happened to all your "stuff" in the  reinstalled apps?  I use Goodreader a lot, and have many folders of PDFs that I need. Were you able to put that kind of data back into the iPad while maintaining the speed improvement?

    Thanks for your help

    Correct.

App data is not preserved. If you have an older backup, I would recommend trying that first so you won't lost ALL of your data, but then after that a restore as new may be in order. You might also check if Goodreader is compatible with iTunes File Sharing so you could import them to a computer.

To check, connect to iTunes. Click on your iPad's name under DEVICES on the left in iTunes. Click the Apps tab at the top. Scroll down to the File Sharing section and see if you see Goodreader. If you do, click the Save to... button in the lower right and select where you want to save the files to on your computer.

Thanks for the info.  Please bear with me as I try to avoid a frustrating weekend "rebuilding" my iPad.

After backing up my iPad using iTunes, and then performing a  DFU fresh iOS 5.1.1 install creating a "new iPad", can I THEN  use iTunes to selectively access the data/files/pdfs/ebooks that are backed up on my computer (via iTunes) and "restore" just that info without ruining or corrupting the clean new iOS 5.1.1 that I just created?

Unfortunately, no. When restoring data from a backup, it's either all or nothing.

OK, that is very helpful to know before I undertake this project.  It will be straightforward to replace my videos and photo albums. I assume my ebooks are safely stored in iTunes and can be easily put back into iBook. I'll  just have to check my PDFs (Goodreader, iBook) to make sure they can be stored on my iMac using the iTunes File Sharing box and then re-imported into the iPad after I reinstall the appropriate app (BTW, I assume that apps I purchased are preserved in iTunes so re-installing, right?)

Do I have it correct (finally  :-)    )

Thanks again for all your help.  I've had many frustrating months with frequent hard restarts, turning off all iCloud functions, notifications, spotlight search (except for apps) just to keep my iPad 1 functioning at an acceptable level....
